What to buy with this budget

Hello ppl
My budget for lenses is about 900 dollars. The camera itself comes with a 18-55 lens.
In order of importance what else would you get?
I do not mind havnig to but 2 or 3 telephotos for price of one good zoom (I hear they are pretty expensive when quality is high).
I don't mind some manual work and extra weight as long as picture quality is enahnced. Let me know what you think.

The first kit I had when I got my first DSLR was the 18-55 kit lens and the Canon EF 70-200 f/4L lens which I still own and use once in a while. Worked well for me and covered my needs from wide to long. The kit lens is always worth keeping for what it costs.

What type of shooting do you plan to do?

What you plan to shoot is the key.

Which ones are the 2-3 lenses you have? Do they say "zeiss" by any chance? If so, I suggest you get this or a similar non AF adapter:

Then you'd be able to use your contax glass with the body of your choice.

Other than that - there's not a whole lot of redundancy in the lens lineups. One you figure out your quality requirements, budget, focal length and speed - there's not too many choices to go with.

If you don't know what lens you need, don't buy any.

I only buy a new lens when there is a picture I want to take and my existing lenses are not capable of doing what I want. There are many reasons a new lens is required such as a wider angle for scenics, longer telephoto for distant subjects, bigger aperture for low light of blurring background, macro for extreme close-ups, or higher quality for big enlargements.

If you can take every picture you want to take with the 18-55 you don't need a new lens. If there are pictures you want to take, but are limited by your equipment, you already know what you need. Buying a lens you don't need just because you have $900 is a waste of money, unless the sum is insignificant to you.

Ditto Scott^^. Get the kit lens and shoot with it for a while. See what focal lengths you tend to use the most, and go from there. If you do not get the kit lens and want a good prime set up for that amount... I would suggest Sigma 30 1.4, Canon 50 1.4, and Canon 85 1.8. This set up will give you some great results and cover the needs for most. Oh, let us not forget a flash unit.

Canon has deferred the ninja order until after my next camera or lens purchase. They want the cash flow first.

The responses posted are good advice. I would sum it up like this. It sounds like this is a camera kit that is on it's way to you or you just purchased it, is that correct? If so, I would simply start snapping away and learning the feature, capabilities, and (eventually) the limitations of your setup. At that point that you are limited by the capabilities of the kit lens and not your knowledge of the equipment, it will help define what it is that you will need out of a new lens. For instance, is it just not sharp enough for portraits? Then a fast 50mm or 85mm prime might do the trick. Do you just not have enough reach? Something in a 70-200mm zoom is a common answer here. Getting blurry images in low light? Either a lens with Image Stabilization (IS) or again, a fast prime might be just the ticket.

Again, don't buy until you have an objective that can't be met with your kit combo. Learning the full extent of the equipments capabilities will be a great experience, improve your knowledge, and help you gain skill as you learn to adapt to the confines of what you have.

I shoot fotos from buildings, natural scenary and occasionaly people (people rarely are original so not so many of them). Main interest is buildings and histrical ruins.
I think I will start with 30-50 and 85 as Ryan suggested.
I hate the word Ninja and would nto want to buy any lens with a name like that no matter how good it is (funny but there it is, it is a dated word and Canon would have been wise to use a more contemporary title).
Sadly my Yashica lenses are not Zeiss, they are from ML series of Yashica Pretty good ones if you ask me) I will include a picture bellow to see what they can do on very limited budget) so I am not sure if the adapter will work.

PS. The photo shows inside of the dome of Sheik LotfAllah mosque in Isfahan Iran. I was there last summer for work. It is a beautiful country.

I'm not familiar with those lenses, so I can't really comment. But as far as I know, if it's the contax/yashica mount you should be able to use them.

Which lenses are they? Prime/zoom?

It sounds sensible, theoretically, but sometimes you need to try things to learn and to know what you want or would like to do.

I do not think that our mind works in such a logic and linear manner, at least for all of us. Just by playing with what we already have may not necessarily create by itself a new need or project, not to mention our desire for new toys...

I would say that if you already have the kit lens, I suggest you may add for example a nice telephoto prime, like the 85 f1.8, a great and relatively inexpensive lens. It will allow you to try different things than the kit lens alone, like the effect on your pictures of a shallow DOF, shooting in low light situations, etc.

A good flash of course, like the 580EX or 430EX would be handy as well, and will allow you to further explore and experiment.
