I'm not one for pixel peeping - (This is the first time I've ever scrutinized the pixels...promise)

But I'de never have thought that my 17-40 F4 would be sharper than my 50mm prime.
Ok I know that the focal length's aren’t the same the 17-40 (40mm) vs 50mm
how can this be true??

It appears on the 17-40mm you are closer to the subject and that is showing more detail because you are closer. The pics aren't framed the same.

Are you sure you've labelled the images correctly? In both cases the one labelled 40mm shows a larger image than the one labelled 50mm, which can only be true if you moved in closer with the zoom (and therefore are not conducting a controlled test).

yes they are the right pics - if you download the image you can check the exif, but I agree it isn't a controlled test. -

I think the 50mm might have been too far away from the subject

Were these taken from the same distance away? If not I'd say set the cam on a tripod and take a picture at 17mm, 40mm, and then 50mm, and see what the sharpness is like.

But I'd say that either the 50mm was slightly off focus, or the 17-40 is sharper just because it's an L lens, just a couple guesses.

Yes put on a tripod and use the same camera settings then for the 50mm move away from the subject until you have the same framing as the 17-40 @40mm.

Hm. Curious. 17-40L is supposed to be weaker at 40 than 17....

Anyway I love my 17-40L =)

It is possible the plane of focus is not the same in the two pictures. With the 17-40 is appears that the prong of the top jack is in sharp focus. With the 50 it looks like the back of well is in sharper focus than the prong.
