My lens is squeaking!! it happens on auto focus- it is most obvious when you engage autofocus with the lens cap on. Surely this isnt normal, but has anyone else experience this? or does anyone know whats wrong with it?

Many thanks A.

Maybe more about which lens it is. High pitched, low, grinding noise?

Only a couple things it could be. The USM or dirt in the barrel. I use a silicone cloth on my lenses. It cleans them and lubricates the plastic. I once got a piece of sand in the barrel pieces and it ground to a halt and never worked again.

Maybe try hand focusing while it's in auto-focus and see if you still get a squeak and try and determine where it's coming from.

Sounds like it's got a problem. I'd call Canon.

I've never seen a soft 17-40, so fear not. I've had two, and both were very sharp.
