Gave my 20D to my dad for his birthday. Didn't see any sense in getting another 20D so got myself the 30D.

I did here's why...

liked the larger LCD screen, spot metering and better options
with ISO (starting to shoot indoor and night time sports).
I was able to buy used on both so I was able to minimize
the difference to about $110 after I moved the 20D. The
20D had 10K shots and the 30D had less than 1K shots
with receipt and blank warranty so that had something
to do with it...

and also, while I'm shooting alot and progressing with
my photography I don't feel I'm ready to jump to a 5D or
1D MKII just yet...

I upgraded mainly for the spotmetering and the bigger display.

For me it was difficult to read the display for the menu's.

For me it was a very goor deal. I lost very little with my 20D.

I lost only about 150 € after 18 months and 30,000 pictures taken.

I'm glad I did. Good luck.

I am also among the crowd that went with the 5D after owning the 20D for a while. I felt the 5D was more of a complement to the 20D; I was looking for a second camera, not a replacement. I can't say for certain that I made the right choice, as I am still waiting for it to arrive, but I am confident it will be worth it.

I have used two bodies for some time now, and having started with 10Ds, once I bought a 20D, I decided to step up to the 30D and see (couldn't be worse than the 20D anyhow) if there was any major difference.

As of now, I still have that setup. I would go to a 5D or 1D -and I probably will as soon as I get the money-, but I would trade the 20D to keep 30D as the backup body.

I find the 30D to be a little more comfortable in the LCD, as well as the quieter and sturdier shutter performance. This is not enough to say it is a better camera. It was two things that made me choose it over a second 20D, at least in my case.

Both cameras (20 and 30) were bought 30 days apart, but the 30D has already 2 times more photos than the 20D. I definitely seem to favor the 30. Honestly, I cannot say why, probably personal preference.

If my 20D croaked today, and I needed a replacement without getting a 5D and higher, I would go for 30D. The biggest jump I think was from the 10D, rather than 20 to 30.

Don't know about you guys but to me spot metering is a very important tool.
The ISO in the viewfinder is great.
