I agree with the comparison of the two versions. The hues of the log are just too close to those of the bird for this sort of editign to make much of a difference. Thanks for the comments. I set the feathering on the Lasso tool to 10 pixels, and I should have had it lower (or zero). I have already gone back and redone the editing with a 1 pixel feather, which removed the halo, but I suspect that this background is going to be a problem in this image no matter what. However, I am going to try your suggestion for the learning experience. I have used PS for some time, but this sort of editing is something I have not done much.
