What do you think? Does it look sharp to you? First picture is full and second is 100% crop. This is right out of the camera with no pp.

Hmmm, mine has yielded sharper results than that, but you DID shoot that at 1/30 at 200mm, which is really impressive! Speed up the shutter and you'll be even more impressed at how sharp it is.

Gosh, I remember when even 1/100 @ 200mm handheld was unthinkable. (for me and my shaky hands at least) IS is such a wonderful thing!

ALL lenses are sharper when stopped down. That is only to a certain degree though, depending on the lens. At a certain f-stop (often in the upperteens of f stops) the quality/sharpness starts to deteriorate.

Just usa a little faster shutter speed, and stop down a couple of f-stops and see what your results will look like. Give us another example with those changes and you'll see a major improvement in sharpness. The lens is fantastic.

f/5.6 is the sweet spot on this lens, followed by f/8.0. Then again, this is the case for a lot of lenses.

Your shutter speed is what was lacking, not the lens sharpness.

THing is I took these using a tripod, mirror lick up and a remote shutter switch. There could have been some camera shake from the boardwalk and other people walking on it.
