Well, here's my first attempt at football. The game was at 3pm so I had good lighting for three quarters. I took these from top of the bleachers at the fifty yard line. The lens that I used was the Tamron 200-500 f/5-6.3. This lens is really tricky in less than perfect lighting. Its real hard to tell if you are in focus. Here's a few. I could have done a lot of things better!

It was cloudy at the start of the game, then the sun came out. The sun was to my left and changing locations was not an option. c&c welcomed! The pic below lost a lot in posting.

OK Aaron, since you asked: All but one of these, the third one, make me scratch my head and wonder what the purpose of the shot was? The first one is a kicker tee-ing up the ball (OK, so?), the second a guy flying over a ball carrier (with the runner terribly out of focus - again, why take this shot?) and the last one the back of a defender before a play (is this guy supposed to mean something to us? Who is Moen, and why did you take a picture of his back?).

I guess what I'm saying is your images don't show much action nor tell much of a story. Not very compelling stuff. The shot of the runner breaking through the line is better.

What was your objective in choosing your subject for these images? In general, you want to show faces in your shots, and the ball, when it is part of the action. Backs are normally consdired throw-aways. Shots taken between plays (also called 'safety shots') are OK, but normally they need to be very tight, very sharp, and definitely show the face of the subject.

I applaud you for posting and looking for comments. This is a very good forum, and I'm sure you'll find a lot of constructive comments. Your position wasn't optimal, and your equipment is only fair, so I'd say for a first attempt, you did pretty well. Keep shooting, and you'll notice improvement. Any way you can get on the sidelines?

Thanks for the comments. I'm already planning on talking with the coach to see if I could get on the sidelines next year. I figured I go and tell them I'd like to volunteer to get shots for the yearbooks.

The pic of Moen I just threw in there because his parents were next to me. This was only one of a few plays for him, so I thought I'd take what I could get. Yeah, I lot of time the AF focused on what I didnt want. That tamron 200-500 is REAL hard to handhold! Oh well, next year!!

BTW, the team were the Pec-Argyle Vikings and Lancaster Flying Arrows. Lancaster won 21-7.

Oh yeah, action shots were very limited from my point of view. 90% of the plays were just runs up the gut. Hardly any passing or sweeps to my side.

GREAT SHOTS on your site! Hope to be half that good someday! Thanks
