I have an excuse, weak, but I have one.

Anyway, I had to delete my equipment list. Just less than two weeks ago, I received the beginning of my new hobby equipment, Canon stuff. I bought the 30D, 24-70L, 70-200 2.8 L, and I ordered a few days ago, 580EX, 50MM 1.8, POTN strap (came in today) Canon 1.4 extender, Storm Hard Case with wheels (arrived yesterday, CF cards, etc., etc.

So, why am I a MORON? It just hit me today, while reading posts, studying lens options, etc., I actually bought the 17-40L lens. I have had it out a couple of times, took a few pics, and still it never clicked that I actually ordered the wrong lens. Have you ever said one thing, and meant another? Ive done that, but I have never bought one thing, took possession, kept for a week, looked at it and the box, and still never realized I had the 17-40 instead of the 24-70 that I even had as part of my signature and emails to buddies, etc. I bought from BH and will call them tomorrow, they have a 14 day return/exchange, I will have to see and make sure I have EVERY little thing to put back in the box, which I think I do.

Excuse (weak) is I have back troubles and take lots of pain meds, but geez, this is the biggest blunder I have made since I was a kid. I didn't even believe it myself, until something in me got queasy and I took a good look at the lens and box. I really hate packaging things and returning them. I didn't even notice the difference in my invoice that I bout a $600+ lens instead of the $1K lens, as I am not really money challenged.

I wish someone was in the Sacramento area dying for this lens, I'd give them one hell of a deal, just to avoid packing and mailing, but the chances of that are slim and none, and I think the bus just picked up Slim a few minutes ago.

BH will more than likely be nice. I continue to buy stuff from them about every other day. Big Brown's driver even asked me if I am opening up some kind of camera store? lol

So, it is confirmed, my head is firmly implanted in my rear. Oh well, if BH says it is too late, or I fail to get it in the mail, it is still a wonderful wide lens. I have three other items I have had RMA numbers for due to breakage, and I never even mailed them out, (not camera related) and I can't tell you how often I have failed to mail out rebates, I've lost literally hundreds, if not maybe even over a thousand dollars due to my hatred for mailing out packages.

So, BH gets a call, I will go ahead and buy the 24-70L and feel like a dummy. I think even Forrest Gump would have caught this one.

The two lenses are very different, but if you've never seen one or the other, who knows? I get the 4 70-200's mixed up all the time. :)

Keep the 17-40mm and get a 50mm 1.4 and you have a better solution all around IMO.

Agree with Condyk.... keep the 17-40, it's a great lens and will come in handy on that 30D.

Couple of DSLRs, number of lenses and other stuff... plenty short on talent.

Condyk and Will are both right. The 17-40 along with the 50mm will give a much more usable combination.
Nice as the 24-70L is, it is just not wide enough on a 30D.

Wah? What's wrong with the 17-40L? I love mine, way more usable on a crop body than a 24-something or another imho =)

17-40L is one of the most popular L's, although I like connecting focal lengths so the 24-70 focal length is obviously more suited for me.

Just a note, this lens is very popular and if you post an ad here and on fredmiranda I'm sure you can find a local. If your desperate and want to give me one hell of a deal and will ship to Canada, pm me!

And I have ordered the wrong thing and realised after. Luckily it was some cheapo few dollar fans for my PC. I ordered 80mm instead of 120mm, when my case doesn't take 80mm fans. Actually, I did this twice, I bought 2 in a store once and then realised afterwards, and then later ordered the same 2 online about a year later. I felt like a huge moron.

I think it depends on what you shoot most. I probably would opt for the 24-70, too, since most of my stuff is on the long end instead of the wide.
