Lens Hood "Conversions?"

I have noticed that the Canon lens hood that came with my 24-105L works just fine with my 17-40 L with no vignetting due to the 1.6 crop factor.

Has anyone done comparisons of other lens hoods that might be used in the same way? It seems to me that a shorter hood on the 100-400L would be very welcome as far as turning the circular polarizer as long as there would be no vignetting.

I know Cyberdyne Systems did some custom shaping (cutting?) of lens hoods some time back, but I would be more interested in purchasing them pre-made. You would think it might be a good idea for Canon to supply the appropriate lens hood based on which camera body you would be using.

So what are you saying? They should make three different hoods for each lens? (granted, some might fit another)

Too much hassle and production. Not many complain about them, really. The lenses (other than EF-S) are simply catered to FF cameras.

I've heard of people using the EW-83J EF-S 17-55 hood on the 16-35 with better results than the recommended EW-83E hood... of course for 1.6 crop cameras only. I wonder if it would vignette on a 1.3? hmmmm probably.

the 24L, 24-105L, and 17-55IS hoods all work on the 17-40 and 16-35 on 1.6x crop sensors. really this is the only situation where one would want a different hood since the hood that comes with these lenses is so clunky and huge. having a SHORTER hood on the 100-400 would only decrease the effinicy of the hood.... so as much as everyone knows its a pain to use a Cpol with a hood, its just a fact you are going to have to deal with, to make a hood so shallow that you could still use the polarizer, well you might as well just not have a hood on.
