For those of you handy with shop tools, here's my version of the much-sort-after-by-some grip for the G1. There's a thread on dpreview Canon forum on holding the G1, and some cool solutions, including a fancy fabricated grip from Japan (currently unavailable for export, but the guy says it'll eventually ship o/s).

then click on link to more detailed photos of grip.

I am not making these, I just wanted to show you what a little time and effort can create. Not much imagination, but a love of working with cameras, wood, metal, tools (yum) and my hands (instead of my head--my usual tool!)

cheers

The famous Japanese grip should be in my hands next week. I ordered mine about two weeks ago and he told me it would take about two weeks. I live about 15 miles from Nao (that's his name). He has an English version of his G1 page. He is charging $70.00 including shipping. My cost was about $55.00 with $6.00 shipping. Had I picked it up I would have saved the $6.00. I'll let you know about the quality of the grip, it should be quite good. I have a friend's father looking at making something very much like it. I'll be keeping an eye on that item also.

Lack of grip !!
The 1 major G1 flaw !!
Though the G1 is a tough act to follow, this is big one on the wish list. Question is, how do we bombard Canon with this (simple ?) need for improvement ?
G1 is still (even post Nikon 995 era!!) king of the ~$800 3.34 hill, but one can always strive for perfection ?

I totally agree with you guys, the other thing that I wish Canon would have done is to put a Strap Eyelet on Both sides of the camera! I will probably wait till my camera is out of warranty, which is in about 10 months, and get together with my dad, who is a tool and die maker, and see what we can come up with. Has anyone else tried this? The G1 is not a point and shoot camera, so I don't understand why Canon just put the strap holder on the one side, and not on both sides.

Thanks for listening,
JennyO

An excellent idea!

I had actually though of doing something very similar but instead of mounting via a base plate I was aiming to epoxy it on to the front face of the camera. As far as I can see this wouldn't do any harm - what do you think?

While epoxying a grip to the front cover of the camera should not interfere with any functions, I'd be reticent, simply because it would undoubtedly void the warranty, and anything can happen in a year of hard use.
I'd recommend a grip that can be removed to send the camera back to Canon as required.

cheers,

PS. I put a fancier grip on my grip (!), so I'll be posting new photos soon.

cheers,
