Now and Then

Taken this morning, first batch of a number of shots comparing scenes from my home town with the same place many years ago, old pictures taken from a book on Otley.

So the 1st shots, the B&W versions, can you remember which type of film you shot with ?

What a stunning comparison Les,simply fantastic mate.
One thing someone can notice...there is not much green left in the first comparison,i suppose thats progress for you.

Very nice that you got the originals and could take pictures almost in the same spots. Looks like the first one would have been better if you were in the street, where the cars would run over you, but hey, you got to do what you got to do. Thanks for posting. That's quite remarkable.

Great idea Les. Is that you to the right of the first photo? It is interesting looking at the detail to see where chimneys have been reduced in height and so on.

What a great idea! I have a book of old photos of Perth and, as the basic layout of streets is unchanged, I should be able to find the viewpoints. Another one for the 'projects list'.

I love these historical shots. The fact that you found essentially the same vantage point and field of view is (whats the British word? oh, yeah...) boffo.

I found a site that has a magnificent one of Seattle. LARGE is here and REGULAR size is here. Take a look, I assure you you will be impressed!

Very good idea and good shots. And I like that there's enough left from the old picture in the more recent one for the viewer to realize that it's the same place.

edit: I've seen similar pics from my hometown in New Brunswick (eastern Canada) and things have changed so much that it's hard to see that it's the same place at all.

That's terrific Les, very interesting and also nice to see that things have not changed all that much over the decades - Otley has retained it's character very nicely.

Hi Mike, it's an interesting project, and something that's been buzzing round in my head for a while, just needed to get off my arse and do something.

It's a lot more difficult than it looks, I took the book with me, but getting the angles, focal length etc took a bit of doing, and is still not as good as I would like.

Around 60-70 years ago, but I don't have the exact date.
