This was taken in Glacier Bay, Alaska, while taking this shot, I heard a very loud rifle shot which startled a lot of us.

Actually it was the ice cracking, the size of this glacier is incredible somewhere between 80 ft and 100ft high some points even higher.

The ice is very blue although this day was overcast, misty and drizzly, I am sure on a sunny day it would even be more spectacular.

Thoughts on the photo?

That is an impressive site and a nice photo. One thing that might have helped is if you had been lucky enough to have something like a small boat in the foreground to give a sense of scale to the glacier.

I find that this is such a common issue with glaciers and mountains. They're just so damn big. It's hard to make them look as big on the pic as they are in reality.

Thanks for all the comments, yes the Glacier is huge, unfortunately no small boats are allowed within so many feet of it due to calving, thats when a piece falls off the side which I never saw when I was there.

The Park Service forbids any small boats from approaching. There has been capsizing of boats apparently when an ice chunk hits the water it creates quite a tidal wave.

Beautiful shot, it really conveys how cold it is up there!

Nice photo. I'd like to see the exif. What setup did you use to get a sharp photo from a moving boat?
