Please provide advice and comments on opinion of which lens I should purchase. I need a lens in the 25-80mm range and was considering the Tamron AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di Autofocus Lens for around $325 new or a used Canon EF 28-70mm f2.8L for around $625 in great shape. Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I have a canon 20D camera.

The L lens will be the best quality optically and build wise, but do you really want to spend so much $ on a used lens that has been superceded anyway?

Also, starting at 28mm is not very wide on a crop camera.

Tamron, tokina and sigma all make fast f/2.8 zooms that start at 16-18mm and go to 50-55mm with a constant f/2.8 aperture, at reasonable prices, similar to what you state for the 28-75mm. I think you'd find these fill the niche better, unless you are sure you don't want a wider angle.

Canon 6D
Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 , Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 macro
CanonEF 17-40 f/4 L Canon EF 24-70 f/4 IS L and 70-200 f/4 L :D
Speedlite 580EX and some bags'n pods'n stuff

The Canon is built better, might have better IQ, does have faster focusing, and fll time manual focusing. It's also 300 bucks more. If you can afford the 28-70 it's a good lens. It's an oldie but a goodie. I think I'd go for the Tamron though, or take the plunge and get the 24-70L.
Either way though, you can't lose I don't think.

Ha! Took a while to find but I knew that I had seen this same question somewhere:

Hope this helps!
