Went on a scouting mission for the 4th Scottish POTN meet today (as I appear to have been nominated as guide... ) and heres a sample of what's in store for the guys and girls.

The house is Cuilvona and the shore of Lochard. Used to live there many years ago.

Found this small waterfall. This was take from under the footbridge.

Was in two minds as to whether I post the third one, as it's not quite come out as I wanted, but want to see what the scottish contingent can come up with !!

That house looks like it is in a beautiful location, so do you miss not living there anymore?

Nice colours in the trees around your ex-abode. What a beautiful place to live!

The last time I was in the Trossachs was also many years ago as a student. I remember we stayed in the Youth Hostel and climbed Ben Venue and another Ben something. We drank lots of beer in the Trossachs Hotel as well (I think). I remember lots of small rivers like these. I'm sure I fell in at least one. Happy days!

Great place to grow up......wish I still lived there.

Guess 'Ben Something' was after the beers then.....:) or is it just your memory is startin to fail with age !! (duck for cover)

Still working on a couple of shots that I want do the merge thing on. I've never tried merging two exposures of the same shot in CS2 but going to give a go tonight. Will hopefully post results later, if it works.

Is it best to use 2 seperate shote (one exposed for sky, one for land/water) or use the same image with 2 RAW conversions?

Any tips from the Perthshire master before I try it (or has Les exposed you as a fraud:D?)

Hoi! Less of this ageist stuff! ..........

I have only ever done merging of 2 RAW conversions from the same original. If you use a tripod I see no reason why you shouldn't use two originals but remember that nothing must move between shots. Try telling that to a bunch of clouds!!!

True, hadn't thought of the movement issue. The 2 RAW conversions sounds like a better approach. There was a tutorial in one of the mag's recently, so going to follow that to start with.

These are nice shots. I do all my work in and around Loch Lomond so im sure i could comeup with a few places to go. And loads of the picyures on my website are taken in and around if you guys want an idea of whats available.

So has this been decided as the venue for the fourth meet?

It certainly seems to be. Check out my post at the bottom of the page on the fourth fabled Scottish POTN meet.

when you take the shot it is a good idea to underexpose the landscape by about 1 stop..... (that way you don't lose too much detail from the sky)

kinda like a mid way exposure between sky and ground.......... then in your raw converter fix one for the sky .......... export it to ps.......... fix it for the ground and export that version

then hold down shift and drag shot 2 (fixed land) into file 1 (fixed sky).....

add a layer mask and draw a gradient from the top of the frame to the horizon.........

this will remove the overexposed sky and let the corrected sky underneath show through....... because you used a gradient the blend is subtle.

(exactly like a gradient filter does it)

in an ideal world you'de take 2 shots but as mike said if anything moves it wastes it........... clouds arn't the biggest issue with that approach because essentially you are making the over exposed clouds transparent so it doesn't really matter.......... windswept bushes and trees at the horizon line are the big problem

Please can anyone give some assistance.
I'm having the same problem with this post as I do with all of Dimitri's .. I see no images.
I used to have this problem with saravrose but that's ok now.
Dimitri and I have given up trying to sort.
What is interesting is that when Dimitri posts a shot on someone else's thread I can see it ok.
Please solve the mystery as I would like to view these posts and make comments.
All the best.
Paul

Nice demo, Alan! That's exactly the technique I have used - got it from a Digital Phot mag video lesson. As well as the gradient tool you can use a soft brush to paint in one of the layers - good for small details.

With large differences in brightness you need to use an ND grad on the camera as well to retain all the available detail. If you get the ND grad just right you don't even need the 2 RAWs trick. I'm still trying!

It has happened to me a few times. I have heard that changing the URL of pages by removing the "www." part can help.

Maybe ask a mod?

Sorry, you've lost me on that one. I use Flikr to host my images, so don't know if that has anything to do with it.
