Went barn hunting this morning and got a couple, course I didn't venture that far from base camp.

Barn and Silo, I like the way the shadows fall on this one.

A barn from 1842, well at least one half the roof is.

And one I keep revisiting, sort of following it's self destruction.

Here is the same barn taken 1 year ago. Different lighting and somewhat overcast sky

There's a wee bit more damage between the last two shots, and I much prefer the colours and sky of the newer shot.

Thanks for the comments, You are right, I'll have to go back in another year and see whats happened. The newer (first) shot was taken at 11:00 AM with the sun over my shoulder and I had my polerising filter on. the older one was taken at 2:15 PM into the sun and no filter. It does make a difference. both were taken in November.

That last barn might not survive another winter in the great white northeast.

I liked those... in a sort of morbid slow barn death sort of way.... :)

I was hoping for some nice red barns - but these are quite interesting. I read somewhere that some of these barns are deliberately left to fall down for some reason, can't quite remember what it was. I like image #3 best.

Thanks all for the comments, It's sad to see so many of the barns disapearing. Elisabeth-Ann I'll keep an eye out for some of the Red barns for you, the reason a lot of the barns are left to just fall down is first the cost to fix them up, it can run upwards to $40,000 or more, and than when they do get fixed up the property taxes go way up so the people just can't win, couple that with some zoning/building regulations, people sometimes can't even change use. For example a person in Connecticut renovated a barn on his property to use for his office only to find out it wasn't allowed, really stupid.

beautiful . I especially love the first of the last, meaning the last shot (up to date) which you took of the last barn Sandy
the rotten fence looks a little like washing hanging out on a line ,which always looks great ( I think)

I was looking for the 'old barn' post on the forum when your thread here came up . delighted to see the pictures.
nice that the old barn is still there
lovely character about it. lovely shape
I was looking for the old post as I got some barn shots by the canal last week
(not old and wonderful though)
may put them on another thread as that barn post may be too long now

regards, Marie

Nice shots, Sandy! I really like photos of old barns and want to go looking for more around here. Most are on private property and you can't get near them. #3 is my favorite of these!

Thanks all for the wonderful comments. One plus about fall and winter is that a lot more barns become visible, no leaves to hide them, so my search goes on. CarolP most of my shots have been taken from the road, no trespassing what so ever. :D I promarly use my Sigma 18-200mm lens and hope for the best
