A timely reminder.

One of our Kiwi members had his stuff nicked yesterday from his car. He was able to give serial numbers straight away for the stolen gear. While this is an all too common occurance, unfortunately, it does serve as a timely reminder. With so much gear being bought and sold, recording serial numbers is often overlooked. I know I haven't updated my records for some time.

So this is your reminder. Go and do it now. Make sure you have all your serial numbers written down, for all your gear, at least twice. Maybe keep one at home and one with your insurer.

I have a spreadsheet and enter everything I own relating to photography, including where and when i bought it, serials, date codes etc. 'just-in-case'.
When i sell something I just 'grey it out', but keep the info - If any of this info is needed I've got it ready.

I think the insurance companies tend to believe you more if you quote this info because they can check it out if they want.

I've got all receipts saved, and almost all on file with my insurance company.

Oh note, Canon NZ do check serial numbers on all cameras they service, and have access to an international list.

When I picked up my 30D, there was a guy collecting his 20D, and being given the good news that it was Stolen. He had bought it from a Parrallel importer. The camera had a fake serial number plaque on the bottom, all done in a style that matched other stolen cameras from either Sri Lanka, or Indonesia (these were stolen new, from a shipping contianer).

I also keep a photographic inventory of all possessions.
