Exif Info Question

Well, I'm working on a little project at the moment, and it occured to me, how do digital SLRs record their focal lengths in Exif information?

I know P&S cameras save the focal length as say, for example, 5.8mm (widest for my cam) which is the real focal length, not the equivalent. The equivalent would be multipled by 6.03 to get 35mm widest.

Now, on DSLRs, such as the XTi, 30D, etc., would the focal lengths be recorded the same way? and need to be multipled by 1.6? Or are they recorded in the equivalent?

The lenses report as their actual focal length. All the Canon lenses I have report both the lens (ie...24-105) and the focal length used (ie 48mm). There is no compensation calculated for 1.6 or 1.3 crop sensor equivalents. You would need to do that math yourself.

Focal length is focal length and has nothing to do with the crop factor. For example, a 100mm lens on a film or full frame camera is still 100mm on a camera with a 1.6 crop. The difference is that when the same lens is used on a crop factor camera a smaller portion of the image circle is used.
