For a 4.5 minute shot why arent there star trails?

He probably had it on some sort of moving mount.

Yep the camera and lens was set on top of a telescope mount which follows (tracks) the sky.

Glad you'all like it.

LOL braduardo, I'd love noise like that each time.....

Madweasel I'm lucky indeed to have darkish skies.
As you can guess I do a fair bit of astro photography with my Canons.

Cheers

No trails because there are no stars... What looks like stars is really just the noise from having a LONG exposure at ISO 800 w/ the 300D. What's really cool is how nicely the "hot pixels" are arranged.

I am just kidding of course. I would love to get a shot like that, and I was also wondering about the trails.

I made a 2-minute shot with a Sigma 14mm fixed-focus lens on my 10D when I first got it. The star trails were really very minor, considering the angle of view of so wide a lens. Even without tracking, trails on a four-minute exposure wouldn't be that visible on a shot downsampled to fit on the screen, when made using a 10mm lens.

I've attached that shot, plus a 100% crop from the corner of the image to show the trail. The center crop showed no movement--it was too close to Polaris and the trail fell within the faults of the lens. The foreground was lit by a full moon, and you can see that our skies aren't as dark as in the wonderful shot of the Milky Way.

Nice shot Mr. Beama. Taken in the UK? Very many classic US cars there?Looks like a thirty-something Ford pick-up in the background.

I recognised Portsmouth's Spinnaker Tower right away! Great shot. I'm waiting for a Canon 10-22 from Kerso right now!
