Can anyone recomend a good ultra wide zoom lens.

I was looking at the 17-40 f4. Can anybody think of a better lens is that price range?

The 17-40 L is generally considered to be a great bargain. Great lens, good price. L for less than a grand. I love mine.

Oh, and it has a cool red stripe, too.

You can take my 100-400 L away when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers.

I've been really curious about the Sigma 12-24 since I first heard about it. I'm looking for a comprehensive review, but the preliminary comments I've read have been pertty mixed. I already have the 17-40L and can assure you there's no better lens for the money.

I'm not short. I'm concentrated awesome!

I don't have much call for wide angle.. I normally shoot long.

I decided I needed a wide angle lens and rather than break the bank on fast Canon L glass, I picked up a Sigma 15-30mm. The idea was just to have it handy in case I needed it.. It's my only non-Canon lens.

It's actually a very good lens. I really like it. As I anticipated, I don't use it that frequently, but I use it a lot more than I thought I would.... It's pretty wide on the 10D, but it's really amazing on my full frame 35mm camera.

Hmm, I did not know that sigma made a 12-24. That is interesting, b/c with canon's crop factor, the 17-40 isnt going to be as wide as I orginally anticipated.

Now the real question is if I can live witout a constant f4.

Thanks for the heads up on the lens belmondo.

Tom,

If you haven't already seen it, this one (external link) is a pretty good review of the Sigma 12-24.

Cheers

Ian

To answer your specific question...

There is no better lens in that price range. :)

There are other options,. but I concur that "The Deal" is the 17-40mm
