Hey guys,

im thinking about either getting the 17-55 F2.8 IS or the 24-70 F2.8 L.

Both in australian dollars are around the same price, of course the L being more expensive but im not sure which one to get. I guess i will be using it for wedding photography, engagements ect. If both were not around the same price i wouldnt care but i just want some opinions.

ive both seen gorgeous images from both.. so what do you think?

Do you plan to upgrade to a 1 series camera, 5D, or add a second body like the 10D/D60/D30? Or use film again?

If you can answer no to all of that, then there's no reason you shouldn't get the 17-55, as it will cover a better range for you in one single lens.

Hey..
yes i do plan one day in the future to upgrade my body to a full frame.. either the 5D or the 30D.. well whatever is out at that point in time, but yes to some sort of full frame...
does the 17-55 not work on these bodies?

If you're thinking about getting a 5D in the near future, I would get the 24-70L. I would test it out at your camera store though, the 24-70L is a heavy lens, about 1/2 lb heavier than the 17-55IS. They are both really nice lens

EF-S can only work on 300D, 350D, 400D, 20D, 30D currently. The EF-S can't physically mount the other cameras listed without problems. You'll break the mirror.

If you don't mind selling stuff, then you can get the 17-55 now. But if its too much of a hassle to you to sell, then you should avoid it.

There are good EF-S lens out there, but they can be limiting.

I say get the 17-55 now, when you upgrade down the road, you can always sell it

Note that the 30D is not a full frame body.

Hi,

I have both lenses, shoot with the dRebel XT and the 30D, and always choose the 17-55MM EF-S IS over the 24-70MM L.

Why? IQ is equal, f/2.8 is a wash, and IS rocks :)

I use the 24-70MM mainly for portraits these days. I use the 17-55 EF-S IS for my "walk around" lens and keep in on the 30D.

Buy the 17-55MM EF-S IS...you will not regret this purchase and, in fact, it will cause you to keep a 1.6 crop body in your kit just so you can use it :)

Jim -- I keep the Leica D-Lux 7 in the Glove Box just in case!

Earlier this year I had to make a choice between getting the 17-55, 24-70 or 24-105.

The 17-55 has a very useable zoom range and image stabilization.

The 24-70 does not go quite wide enough for general purpose shooting on an EF-S cameara, for my style of shooting. It has a longer telephoto end but does not have IS.

The 24-105 also does not quite go wide enough, but it has IS and an even longer telephoto range. It is however a stop slower which can be a disadvantage for general purpose use.

I chose the 17-55 and have not regretted my decision. The more I use it, the more I like it.

im thinking maybe the 17-55 is probably the better option at the moment.

I started a similar thread about the 17-55 vs. the 17-40L...I got the same impression (that the 17-55 was the better choice.) Seems like if you have a crop body and you can afford the 17-55, just buy it.

It is for an EF-S compatible camera because of that 1.6 crop.

Not all 1.6 crop bodies are EF-S compatible. The D30, D60 and 10D cameras are all 1.6 crop and will not accept EF-S lenses.
