hey guys i'm pretty new to this forum and just recieved my camera. im using a kit lense that is 18-55mm by canon. the lense is just OKAY now but thought it was awesome when i first got it

but anyways i was lookin for a lense that gives me a pretty good wide angle like my current one but with WAY more zoom. are there any lenses out there such as 18-150mm or osmething around that area?

oh one more quick question

what is it meant by you guys saying the L lense. i realize that L lenses are super expensive

You won't find a good lens that can cover from 18-150mm. Tamron has an 18-200mm, but it suffers a lot. Because of lens physics and dynamics, you simply can't have good quality from ultrawide to telephoto in the same lens. You have to compromise.

If you want reach, I'd get the Canon 70-200mm f/4 L. It's only like $500, and it has superb optical quality.

If you want wide, get the Canon 17-40mm L, which is about $600.

If you want middle of the road, and don't mind getting off-brand lenses, I'd say get the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8. It has some reach, some wide, and good quality. Plus, it's fast.

I hope this helps.

The "L" designation is used by Canon to denote the "professional" grade lenses, as differentiated from the "consumer" or "prosumer" lenses. The "L" is usually taken to mean that the lens in question is a super performer in both optical quality and build quality.

"L" is for Luxury. The lenses designated L by Canon are supposed to be their best lenses in a given focal length. Some are weather sealed, most have expensive and/or rare glass elements with special optical properties, etc.

The only "L" lens that goes wide to telephoto is the Canon 28-300 IS "L". Its a large beast of a lens (at least compared to the other's being discussed) but surprisingly sharp through most of its range. A bit pricey, though, at over $2k.

if you want more reach at a low cost...i'd suggest the sigma 18-125. (this would be the closest thing to the range you're asking for.)

A good bang for the buck zoom is the Canon 28-105 II 3.5-4.5. Make sure you get the f/3.5 version. It's a pretty good lens for it's focal length and it's what I used before I got the 24-70L.

wow ok guys thanks for the reply. i have come across many more questions before i decide which lense i want to purchase

solpics i have taken into consideration of the Canon 28-105 II 3.5-4.5 which i see on bhphoto for $230 which is definitely within my budget.

That lense would be almost perfect for me but i want quality. could someone point me to a thread where there is a comparision between a normal lense and a "L" lense.

My budget would be $400. if i could get anywhere near the 28-105mm with an L lense with that budget please let me know which one.

Also to be sure what i will use this lense for i will list them below
1) Mainly Automotive Photography (want crystal clear pictures)
2) Nature/Landscape
3)People/portrait (rarely)

I'm pretty much trying to find a lense within my budget that could be used as an all around lense while also getting crystal clear pictures.

I currently have a 18-55mm lense which was satisfying at first but not anymore

the cheapest L you can find with any sort of wide angle would be the 17-40L (< $600 after DOUBLE rebate)

you say you want good optics, yet you're eyes are already fixed on the L. pay up the premium, or consider getting the 3rd party lenses like the tamron 17-50 or the sigma 18-50.

seems like the L bug has already bit though ;)
