somehow it has the feel of those japanese paintings you sometimes see (all it needs is a heron :))

To hell with the boat...I would have stopped there all day!

You got a great exposure balance between sky and water.
Like John, I am a fan of these pastely images and like the simple uncluttered look.

Can you explain the ND bit?!

Malla used a graduated neutral density filter ('ND grad' for short). Its a square or rectangular piece of glass which is half neutral grey and half clear with a zone of gradual change from one to the other in the middle. The grey half cuts the light (in this case by one stop) so slightly underexposing the top part of the scene. This prevents detail being lost in the brighter sky part. He put the filter in a holder and set the zone of graduation at an angle as the bright upper part was more to one side.

He did it so well you wouldn't notice (unless you used ND grads a lot yourself - and even then I wasn't sure) and I was praising him for his subtle use of these filters.

It's a beautiful shot, but i actually prefer it with some of the bottom cropped off, maybe just a personal thing!?! Love the colours and the general feel of the shot. ;)
