Hey all, This is my first post after hanging out for about two weeks and reading everthing I could about lense. I just bought a 30d to replace my elan 7. I figured I would just use my old lense canon 28-105mm, but I hadn't figured in the 1.6 factor. Anyway I am now leaning to the Sigma AF 17-70. Just looking for input if everyone is happy or not who has this lens. Also are there other alternatives in this size range that I should be looking at.
Thanks

Hi!

I recently sold my 28-105 Macro USM II in favour of the Sigma 17-70 and so far I am pretty sure it was the right thing to do. 28 was (for me at least) not wide enough.

I also got the impression that the 28-105 gave me far better results on my old SLR (Eos 30) than it did on the DSLR I now use (350D, XT).

I am glad I went for the 17-70 since it in my case was a good upgrade in terms of image quality. :) It seems as the Sigma works better on a DSLR than the 28-105 USM II, which is considered as a "decent" lens.

There are many great threads here on that lens. I own one and love it. Very sharp, covers a nice focal length range, fairly quick to AF, pretty quiet and well built.

Heard many good things on the Sigma 17-70 but I also suggest you to take a look at the Tamron 17-50.
Anyway, welcome to the forums.

I replaced my kit lens with the 18-55...never looked back, it's fanatstic and for the price you can't go wrong.

A nice lens with good macro capability. For what it goes, you won't find better.

Leader of the pack for me. I just bought one as a travel lens but it has replaced my sweet 17-40mm L as it's just so practical as a walkaround. Very good buy.

Thanks for the input. It sounds like a no-brainer to me. I will probably order it this week.
