Just a couple snaps of my momma... Ignore the extra space. I am going to crop as an 8x10.

I agree, but it is hard to tell family how to pose. :p

If this is an important picture you have to treat them just like anyone else. Pose thme before you lift the camera to your eye. Sometimes I tell them what I am doing.

As an example, I look at them with my head slightly to the right and then slightly to the left. Then I say, I'm trying to pick your best side. They will have an opinion. If they are right, then go with it. Sometimes they are wrong. In which case I just say "you know its amazing how picture look better if the part of your hair is close to the camera" or insert far from the camera. Now you have control of the subject. This is just an example and does not work all the time.

I have a shoot coming up of a teen that I know will squint at the slightest bit of light. Therefore I have scheduled an early morning shoot. Also, he will be hard to get a natural smile from. But the truth here is whether its a stranger or close relative, you have to work on these very same things.

Here is how I envision you finishing the portrait.

I will have to check back on this. Unforunately, my work server is blocking this. Thanks in advance.
