Ok, I know I am going to get many posts on going back on my lens philosophy. I vowed never to buy a lens slower than f/2.8. That changed today. BUT let me explain further.

Canon released a new L lens.

If people are interested I'll make up a mini review with pics.

Fixed! ;)

ETA: I somehow missed the line where you'll be selling it back on here... I suppose that's actually cheaper than renting one?

Come on, Dante. It won't be so bad slumming with the little people, will it? :)

No, I got that. I am going to bring a flash, rather than traveling with my 5 speedlights, I'll just have one. :(

For inside rides and the character dinners, lunches and breakfasts, I'll have on the 24-70.
Outside for longer needs, ITs going to be the 70-200 f/4. Cant believe I am saying f/4. I feel so dirty.. :):)

congratulations Dante. you are too bright of a guy to not believe in the right tool for the job and maybe after being dulled by excess you have, at last, come home.

if you decide to keep the new lens you can always say it's your wife's. seems like i've heard that a time or two :D .

i'm headed to the SF zoo tomorrow to put my 70-200f4 IS to THE TEST :D .

Hey Ed, you've given him the perfect alibi...he can just say he's borrowing yours ;)
(actually, I've seen a lot of photos pop up lately from this lens...I'm just shocked at the IQ! Definitely wouldn't be selling it!)

Hmm....after getting Canon's R&D team to work on more sub 2.8 lenses, you go around do a full u-turn and say f4 is ok??? Shocking ;)

But yes, welcome to the 'convenience of 70-200f4 club'. This lens is the perfect size and weight - period. And with IS, the lens is just a 'must have'. Would be most interested in your review esp. since it will be compared with the results from the 24-70.

Congrats....

ps: We are used to some turns on your lens choices - I still have your praise post for the nifty fifty bookmarked :)

Unless my 50L shows up, no. Obviously you dont have kids, :) as I am going to need to go as light as possible. NO grip! Man, all my shots are going to be in the landscape orientation!!! :(

Thats the whole point!, youve got some portable lens carriers with you, just strap a bag on your kids backs and let them carry all your stuff

Well I can give a complaint about it already the 70-200 is just not wide enough for close up shots and that little 24-70 is absolutly to short to take pictures of them on the rides when standing on the ground

Dante and i are homies and he has offered to let me try out his coveted L lens collection so the idea is not that far-fetched :D .

as far as IQ goes the verdict is still out for me....what i mean by that is i still haven't a clue if the IS is as sharp or is sharper than the non-IS.

the two lenses are very close as far as i can tell and hopefully i'll know more after my trip to the zoo tomorrow ;) .

the SF zoo is great for taking pictures. i gave my 70-200 non-IS a good workout there last year.

OK, OK, so this lens is so light, It almost flew out of my car window when I rolled it down to talk to a neighbor on the way to dropping off my kids. A big gust of wind....

Seriously. This lens is build like and L series lens. Quality thru and thru. Hood seems effective and the leatherette pouch is just icing. The IS on this lens is the 3rd generation series. Seems to really settle down and stop alot of shake. I shake before I have my coffee and I shake after due to the coffee. I was impress to pull in some shots that were 1/3 second and to find them very sharp. This IS system reminds me of the one that was on my DO lens. Very Sweet!! Typical is the IS mode adjust button. No surprise there. As are the AF/M button and focus limiter switches. Typical of the 70-200 series lenses, the focus ring and zoom ring are well placed and function smoothly. Focus is very snappy and so far the colors and contrast seem reminiscent of its big brother 2.8 IS.

Both ends of the zoom range seem VERY sharp. On following pics, all were handheld, FP was center of full and crop displayed.

First pic is 200mm full

Conclusion. Well I am not personally sold on f4 lenses for my usages for my portrait work. This is not for low light but for absolute DOF control. Yes there is a little difference BTW f/4 and f/2.8, and this is why I typically use fast primes and reserve zooms for emergency and travel usage. This lens will make a fine traveling companion and was purchased for that. Build is L and so is operation. Is the IS worth the price? A question you will have to ask yourself. I know it is nice for me when I am using lenses approaching 200mm but not really needed. nice option to have and not use rather than want and not have. I think canon hit this one out of the park.
