Well I can give a complaint about it already the 70-200 is just not wide enough for close up shots and that little 24-70 is absolutly to short to take pictures of them on the rides when standing on the ground

are you on a crop camera? That is why I am planning to take both. I can change lenses like a MO FO!

congratulations Dante. you are too bright of a guy to not believe in the right tool for the job and maybe after being dulled by excess you have, at last, come home.

if you decide to keep the new lens you can always say it's your wife's. seems like i've heard that a time or two :D .

i'm headed to the SF zoo tomorrow to put my 70-200f4 IS to THE TEST :D .

Ha Ed, Wifes lens. ROTFLMAO! Very good. I do feel this is the right tool for the job. I just was out with my gripless 5D and this lens. Was like carrying a point and shoot. 24-70 on a gripless 5D is not balanced, but I will have to make due.

Have fun at the zoo!!!

Well, I'm left reading this thread and remain a little SPEECHLESS! Dante, what are you thinking? First the 5D, now the f4. What's going to happen next? If you tell us you are going to start using Quantary filters, I'm going to have to send Maureen out to you and slap you around. :) ;)

After looking at his gear list now, I'm thinking he's fallen off his pedistal and becoming more like the rest of us. :)

LOL, Suzy, I sold my 1dsmk2 to make room for the 1dsmk3. Patience. I will have to suffer with the 5D for a bit longer. I have been looking for a travel partner for my 24-70 for some time. Was going to get a 70-300 DO again and maybe that is what I should have done. Anyway, after the trip this lens will be for sale.

I was on a pedistal? Only because you put me there. No wonder my view was so nice!! L(

I realize I'm a little late to the party here, but I'll invite myself nevertheless.

Dante, you knew better than to have that little circle at the bottom green.

Admit it, you're quaking in your boots and are to scared to be online when ol' Petkal gets wind of this.

You should have called me. I would have sent you my 70-300 DO to use.

I looked at that 70-300 F4 at the show in New York. It's a toy. Yeah, an L-of-a-toy, but a toy.

I very rarely carry my 70-200 f2.8 around. I use it for shooting wrestling in a gym, night football. When I'm out and about, though, the guys I go with bring theirs, but they're a lot younger than you, and a bit younger than me.

So, where am I leading? You did the right thing. You got a nice tool/toy for your trip. You can take good pics with an instamatic.

Look forward to your results, you traitor.

I'm now wanting that 24-105 more and more. Heck of a lot lighter than the 24-70 f2.8. Maybe that's what you should have gotten. :)

mark

As so many people have said already, I'm sure you will find the lens to be quite nice. I think it's a pretty good compromise lens. It's not a huge reach, but it has a very useful range, and if it's like my f4 (non-IS) then it will focus very fast, and be razor sharp. Mine is so sharp that I could easily print a 4x6 photo from a 533x800 crop and have it look pretty decent, and that's with a 300D.

I'm sure you will find that it works quite well for your shots on your trip, just because you will use the wide lens indoors, and should have plenty of light while your kids are running around outside anyways. You'll have a lot of good light for almost the entire day, and with 3 stop IS, You will still be able to stop a fair amount of action.

I had my gf try out the 70-200 f2.8 IS on an XT body with no grip, just so she could get an idea for how big it really is. She didn't like it much. However, she really likes my f4. "We" also tried out the 100-400 L IS so that she could see the one I have my eyes on. That one blew her away... Let the chipping away start...

Do you want honesty? Yes, it is hypocritical. If i had to be even more honest, I'd like to see you USE the gear you have more instead of talking about it so much. I don't mean to be rude of course, but how many posts do you need to make about what new lens you bought with no real useage coming from it, that too seems hypocritical. I am sure most of us are no different though :)

Just my .02, I could be wrong, who knows!

Well he is one of THOSE people that can just buy that 3000 dollar lens for that one trip and decide not to sell it but talk about it
