i had heard that stuff is cheaper down there. how complete of collection do they have. heck st maarten is my first stop i could buy the stuff for the trip there

I actually don't think things are that much cheaper down here than they are in the States, but there's no sales tax so that may help depending on where you're from.

I recently picked up 3 lenses from the Boolchands on St. Thomas (the one at the cruise ship dock...there's 2, but that one has a better selection) and the total was only about $50 less than what I priced out on adorama.com. The real savings for me was that I didn't have to pay shipping or duty ("No Mr. Customs officer, I had these with me when I went over to St. Thomas" :))

Of the 3 shops, I'm fairly sure they'll have whatever it is you're looking for.

I would have to agree, absolutely. It's somewhat of a fallacy that you're getting "huge discounts." It's duty free - that's all. The prices vary depending on what you're after as some may be better, some may be worse. But like souporman said, it's the tax and shipping you save right off the bat. Just don't declare it on the way back in. ;)

I got my Extender 2x II for $299. It's better than $300+ I've seen, but it's not really all that much cheaper. The 100-400mm was going for $1,399, for example.

heh, thanks for the info. now to decide if im going to get a 10-20, or a G7. I think ill be able to live without a macro and just keep on using my tubes, they work well enough, and thats not my especiallty either. if canon made housing for the G7 id definitly go with it, but alas they dont, and no one else has it yet, and even when they do it wont be cheap. on the one had the 10-20 will help me get the most out of my landscapes. but on the other side of things the 17-40 hasnt really let me down, and i could always throw it on the 1D if i need wider. on the other hand some of the islands i dont know if im going to want to drag my SLR around the whole day, but will always want a camera on me, and the G7 looks promising.

ohh yea ill also be getting a set of B+W ND and grad filters, and a remote release, for the landscape stuff on whatever lens i end up useing. im goin with B+W screw ins over a cokin or whatever setup because, well first i dont know anything about them, and second i dont want to deal with them on vacation.

be sure to go to Boolchand's in St Marteen or St Thomas. I bought my 30D and several lens there. good shop and good prices.

Agreed. I just bought my 70-200mm f2.8 from the Boochland's in St. Thomas for a very good price.
