I have to take an emergency flight out and I want to take some of my gear with me. I've never flown with a lot of gear and haven't flown since the new security regulations. I'm looking for knowledge and advice.

I'll be taking a 20D w/grip and I'd like to at least take my Bigma, 17-40L, nifty and 100 f/2.8 macro. What can I expect if I check this as carry-on?

The flight will be domestic (PDX - COS) but PDX is an international airport.

If there's another forum where this will receive better attention please move.

Thanks.

As long as it fits in an acceptable carry-on bag, you're OK. They may want to swab for explosives, or take things out of the bag, but everything you listed is acceptable carry-on. Just remember to not take any lens cleaning solutions in carry-on.

PDX being international doesn't matter, either.

I travel all the time and while I don't carry large amounts of gear, there will be no problem if you carry it on. You will be permitted one carry on bag that will fit in the overhead based on the airline's size limits (usually fairly generous--small duffel size bag) and a "personal item" that they define as a laptop bag or purse. At the present time they are not asking for still cameras to be removed for xray but they are for video, although it remains that the TSA or whatever screening outfit is being used has the arbitrary ability to create rules that differ from other airports. Obviously they will have to go through the machine. To my knowledge, there is no potential damage to doing so. Even though an airport is "international" there are usually separate facilities for international departures vs. domestic but there is no difference in security.

If your lens cleaning solution is 3oz or under - they should let you take that through security as well. Just thought I would let you know.

Only if it's in a clear ziploc bag. Everyone knows explosives can't penetrate clear plastic! ;)

Lens cleaning solution isn't a specifically permitted "personal item" in TSA's listing (http://www.tsa.gov). You may get away with it, but don't count on it. Still has to be in the 1 qt. zip lock bag (which must be that).

I guess taking a cleaning cloth would just be easier for the shorter trips..... :)
