Don't have a DSLR yet, so I'm using my Canon Powershot s500. pics come out good, but I can't seem to get it to focus how I want it to. Here's an example..

IMAGE: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v302/blacklancer/Picture010Small.jpg

I want more of the foreground in focus, but I can't seem to get it to look right no matter what settings I use. Is it just because I am using a point-n-shoot??

If you use auto-focus its always going to pick its own focal point - try manual focus ...

blacklancer,
I am not familiar with the s500 but the exif data shows you only used f/2.8. To get more DOF (depth of field) you need a smaller aperture (not sure if you can set aperture on your camera).

I'm not sure what the minimum focusing distance is on that thing, but there is a point where the subject is too close for the lens to focus. Powershots can get close because they have such a small focal length, but they weren't designed specifically for macro so it may not be close enough for you. It looks like you can get some decent shots with it though.

i'm with you 100%. i think that's what the problem is. hopefully i'll be upgrading soon, but in the mean time, i'm happy with this camera for day to day use. i'll be hanging on to it to keep in my car with me. :)
