Hmmm, seems like you have a lot of overlap in coverage, any specific reason you got the f4L IS version?

Tom, while the 4 lenses do overlap, they each have their strengths for specific shooting. Generally-speaking, the 1-4 for wildlife, 1-3 for outdoor sports, 7-2f4IS for travel/walkaround, 7-2f2.8IS for everything in between. I'm fairly confident the new f4 IS will get plenty of use. The f4 IS really separates itself with its lightweight from the others.

Wow, that's a lot of lenses but I guess we all have to feed our lens addiction. =)
Glad the new 70-200 f4L IS is a nice lens and I'm even more glad that they are not discontinuing the very good non IS version. I think it's a great entry level telephoto L lens.

Bit off topic, but someone was thinking about getting a Sigma 120-300 f2.8 for portraits and sports with a 2X TC for wildlife and really long distance work. This way you have a 120-300 f2.8 and a 240-600 f5.6 set up. Very versatile, but expensive and heavy too.

Another thing I noted is how well the 70-200 f4 and f2.8 version work with 1.4 and 2x TC's. The biggest thing I see with them shot wide open seems to be a bit of CA and less contrast when compared to super zooms like the 100-400 and not so much in sharpness. If I were doing things all over again, I'd consider the 70-200f2.8L with a 2x TC as a great way to get a 70-400mm range for the least dollars.

Just food for thought.

what about the non-IS 70-200mm L f2.8 for the same price as the 70-200 F4L IS. Would people prefer the f2.8 even though it is non-IS or go with the F4L IS. You can get one more stop but will that compensate enough for not having IS. I was debating getting 70-200mm range in canon only but now the F4 IS is out but price wise it is same as the non IS f2.8. wondering which one would people prefer. Right now I am leaning for f4L non IS anyway since primarily I would use it as an outdoors lens and price is nice:)

As with all things in life, "it depends".

One stop of light may or may not make a difference in visible camera shake, but IS certainly will.

One stop of light may or may not make a difference in subject motion blur, but IS certainly won't.

Eliminate all doubt, get the 2.8/IS. ;)

I think what surprises me most is the side by side picture. The f/4 doesn't look THAT much smaller than the f/2.8... Maybe looking down both barrels would show off the size difference more.

the F4 IS weighs almost half that of the f2.8 IS and takes a 67mm filter instead of 77mm.

the f4 IS weigh about .5 lbs less than my 24-70L.

it is a very light, compact lens with excellent IQ and 4-stop IS.

many of the people attracted to the F4 IS (ME) want a compact lens and are willing to forgo f2.8 and save $500 to get it.

better decision from my point of view.

i'd have a hard time owning two expensive lenses that do nearly the same thing.

that's why i went with the F4 IS...it combines the best attributes of both lenses and has the best IS unit that canon makes as a bonus.

congratulations JoJo. i didn't see this thread until this morning so i'm a little late. i'd like to hear your impressions comparing the various canon 70-200s.

does the f4 IS accept the 1.4 TC as well as the others? etc etc :D .

Honestly Ed I might...It won't be for quite some time though. I figure, save for it, order it and compare it against my 24-70EX. If it really doesn't floor me or make a huge difference, send 'er back within the timeframe!

3-stops and 4-stop of shutter "gained".
