I just got a 70-200 f/2.8L IS. I just don't think it's up to par. Maybe a bad lens, maybe I expect too much; but it's not near as sharp as my f/4.0 was. I'm considering returning it but I need some advise. Should I go back to my f/4.0 of try the f/2.8 without IS.

Do you really need IS with the high shutter speeds used for sports photography?

IS is not highly recommended for sports. IS is for camera stability not the motion of the athletes you are shooting. IS has it's best effects below 1/250 or in setting #2 for panning. If I am shooting landscape or a bird hand held at a slow shutter speed my IS is on. For all sports shooting it is off.

That's what I thought. I thinking about getting the 2.8 non-IS and supplementing it with the 85mm 1.8. My only dilema is that I could also go with the f/4.0 and upgrade my XT to the 30D. Decisions, decision...

I vote for upgrading to the 30D. Quicker focus and great high iso performance for the cave like gyms. The 85mm is my primary indoor lens, sharp and fast to focus. Good luck.....

XT+70-200IS is a bad combo if you leave IS on for sports, the batteries just aren't meant to handle that much drain. upgrade if you can, or else turn off IS (you normally don't need it for sports anyway). IS is meant for portraits and indoor shots anyway...

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.
