Smugmug write potected...

Is there a way on smugmug to make gallerys protected from the public but OK for me (the owner of the site) to right click and "save as"? For easy uploading?

Just make some public and some private.

No, not at this time. I e-mailed Smugmug about this a few weeks ago and they said they are working on it. I want to be able to right click a gallery when I'm logged in but right now you can not do that. The only way you can right click (even if your logged in) is to turn right click protection off which leaves the gallery open to the public.

What I do is protect the original from public view. Anyone who wants to use the image has to deal with just the 800x533 version, which isn't really good enough to print from.

Even if right-click protection was enabled, the pictures will still be in the user's temporary internet files folder so they can find the photo if they really wanted to.

as long as the print screen button is on a keyboard, there is no way to protect your pics.

Absolutely. Just go to gallery customisation, click Private (prob add password too) and unclick right click protect and enable large or original size images.

I see this "print screen" exception on all these "write protected threads"..

How does that work. If I saw a picture I wanted and it was right protected I could use "print screen", but doesnt that only print the picture I want in the size and format that is on the screen? Or does it save it somewhere where you can manipulate it and actually make it desireable/usable? I guess I just dont understand what the benifit to "print screen" would be.

A lot of browsers will hold the image in cache which you can retrieve off of your disk. Much better than the print screen method.

With Smugmug what it really sounds like you want to do is make the gallery "private" instead of "Public" meaning that regular viewers to your site will not be able to see it, only you will be able to when logged in.

Hit the customize button for a gallery for the option:
public: ? Yes: No: show this gallery on your homepage?

Just because you mark a gallery private does not mean that you can not share the URL for the gallery to other users. If you copy and paste the url for people to follow they will be able to see it, it is just not availible for public viewing on your site.

You can, if you want, password protect the gallery (Either public or private) so the only way to view it is with a password that you provide.

Oh you did. This was just some positive reinforcement.

My question then becomes, how usable is the picture they are stealing if it looses so much quality then? Its not like they will be able to make prints and such off of it right?

Not saying that stealing ANY work is OK, just wondering how much its worth geting bent over it...

You'd be able to get mediocre (at best) 6x4 prints from an 800x533 shot. May be ok for a bedside photo, or something in a tiny frame, but it's really not worth going through the trouble of protecting it that much (at least to my mind). It's when they get the high-resolution picture and print that as a nice glossy 12x8 where I'd start feeling a bit miffed.

Worst you're likely to get is commercial sites stealing your image to put on their own site. At least then you can sue then for breach of copyright.
