I've always wanted to get into photography, so for Christmas I asked for a Powershot S3-IS, which has already been ordered, and stashed away until then. I was wondering if this is a good beginner camera that will get me going on the basics of photography. It had great reviews, so I said what the heck! Now, I've got to finish my Senior Research conclusion. And sorry if this is the wrong place to post this.

Thanks

IMHO, it's an excellent camera to start with. Enjoy and post lots of pics.

I think you'll have fun with it. I upgraded to an S2 from an old 1mp basic Kodak and I don't regret the move. I consider the S2 my first "real" digital camera. :D

It's still a point & shooter so you don't have to be a pro to use it, but some "pro" features are available when you're ready. The camera covers a good range on the digital photography learning curve.

The super-zoom and flip-LCD add to the fun factor compared to regular point & shoot. So do the video mode if you use it, apparently it's excellent for a still camera.

Just remember to read the user's manual and POTN ;) in order to get the hang of it. I wasn't satisfied with my first pictures on the S2, but some documentation and practice helped me to get better.
