So I was just about to order an 85 1.8 to tide me over until I can get the L, but then I took a peek at the MTF charts on it. Now I don't consider these to be gold, but it seems edge sharpness on full frame could be a concern. Am I nuts? Is this something I should be worried about?

I wouldn't worry about it. The 85/1.8 is a gem. One of Canon's finest IMHO. I bet you find that you don't even want the f/1.2 once you've experienced the f/1.8.

Here's one, uncropped, with the 85/1.8 on the FF 1Ds MkII. Shot at f/2.8.

In case this is true, this means that you returned the lens eight times? How can this be possible? Either you are too picky or Canon sells a +1k lens which you have to return numerous times (I've read 15 times in the forum)... Which is the truth?

Yes, your fine photos show that the 85 and FF go together well. Great background separation.

ohh, you are new here!!!!! ronnie doesnt keep gear more than a month. he has a habit of selling stuff to buy other stuff, getting bored of it, then buying back the other stuff. in this case the 24-70 he has let go of and re bought 9times, and were giving him a hard time about it.

If you are using this for portraits edge sharpness won't matter much if you're blurring the bg

The 85 f/1.8 is really sharp even wide open, and very fast focusing. It's a great lens, especially for the price.

So I must have started in photography the moment I joined POTN?

Enough about the 24-70L. It's off topic and doesn't belong in this thread.
