The shots I'll be taking with this lens will be printed fairly large (some up to 20x30). Would anyone care to share some crops?

ohh, you are new here!!!!! ronnie doesnt keep gear more than a month. he has a habit of selling stuff to buy other stuff, getting bored of it, then buying back the other stuff. in this case the 24-70 he has let go of and re bought 9times, and were giving him a hard time about it.

yep.. I think Ron needs to be tagged 'canon's used car salesman'... ;) ;)

Ron, If you want my opinion, save and get the 85L. for your clubbing and portrait work it will really shine.

a few things:

1) this lens is a gem both on crop and ff bodies. my friend uses it on his 5D most of the time and his results are mind blowing.

2) i would NEVER base lens buying on those MTF charts especially if they go against everything users say. this lens has been praised to death by most members of this forum so i have no reason to doubt its performance regardless of the MTF charts.

It's a great lens. One of the best values. Of course the 85L has does well in the portrait stuff, but its also a lot more.

85 1.8 definitely is no slouch.

I wouldn't worry about it. The 85/1.8 is a gem. One of Canon's finest IMHO. I bet you find that you don't even want the f/1.2 once you've experienced the f/1.8.

I agree... The 85 1.8 is great, both on a FF and a crop camera. An excellent and versatile lens.

It's a cracker of a lens - sharp even at f/1.8 (though I don't always get the focus spot on) - centre crop and the original image. Next I'll post an almost identical shot where I got the focus out, but it means I can give an edge crop.

Both shots were shot RAW, and no PP done at all (not even levels, etc), just converted using RSP.

Note, both shots taken with EOS 20D, ISO 400 (this shot f/2.0, 1/250 sec)

And this one is an almost identical image, but the focus was out, so I can show you the edge sharpness (this shot EOS 20D, ISO 400, f/2.0, 1/320 sec)

I was testing the focal length of the 85 today...and so I used my husband's 1.8. It really is a dynamite lens...the bokeh is very nice too...I was so shocked at the quality, for the price. In fact, I liked it so much on the 5D that I decided against the 85 1.2 that I was going to buy (gonna buy the 50 1.2 instead) and will just borrow the 1.8 (with his blessing) when I need it...it's really nice. Locked on focus faster than the 35 f2 and faster than the 50 1.4. It's minimum focus distance is abt 2ft (more than I'd like). But it's sharp and I didn't notice any vignetting. Again, I was really shocked at the photo quality...(and for a long time now, I've really REALLY wanted the 1.2, if that tells you anything)

Who looks at corners anyway? Who buys a lens based on charts? Beam me up Scottie. This is not a photography forum ... or not as we know it.

Quite, Dave - I can't say I do apart from anything else, what's in the corner is normally out of focus anyway :).

Well, Captain, I did (look at the corners)...that's what shocked me...the 5D has a tendency to have a lot of light fall off and there wasn't much at all w/the 85....much less compared to the 50 1.4. I admit that I assumed for the price it wouldn't measure up at all...I was wrong. And I was really shocked at how quickly it focused in low light...nice little lens (no wonder husband uses it all the time)...
