Goatee the Katz Eye. To be honest I think all are the same even the generic ones been sold on ebay like this one http://cgi.ebay.com …em=320038787626&rd=1&rd=1 (external link)

The whole idea is to have a reference point to Manually focus on where the normal screen does not offer you that at all.

Which ones are you getting KonTiki - the Haoda or the Katz Eye?

Ron, If you want my opinion, save and get the 85L. for your clubbing and portrait work it will really shine.

This sure looks like a WA shot to me, and the EXIF shows 35mm. ???
I think someone got a little confused.

I think you can learn more from user photos and "for sale"

You know, for the price, how can you not try out an 85/1.8? It's a real bargain; up there with the 100/2 in terms of value I'd say.

Ron, I know you are on top of these things, but yesterday in another thread somebody posted a link to onecall.com, wherein they had the 85L for 1198. Is that a misprint? Try ordering it and see if they honor it.

Eh? Skip - your post just appeared beneath my reply. How'd that happen?

It happened that way because I deleted the original copy and reposted with a tweak or two. I didn't like the edited.... thing stuck at the bottom when I just wanted to change a letter or two...

The timing is funny, though.

I manually focus my 20D all the time. Here's how I do it.....

Actually makes sense. Hmm I think I learned something here on POTN for the first time in awhile, besides going broke that is ;)

I recieved my 85 f/1.8 today and had time to make some outside shots, Portrait and Landscape. I also tried inside with flash. This thing can see in the dark. The peak pictures are from f2.8 and above. At 1.8 you can focus on the nose and the ears are blured. I think you at least ought to borrow one before you rule it out. The 85mm is a longer working distance, but awesome color and crisp pictures can be obtained. This lens may even be a little to sharp for portrait work as it gets every blemish. I think as I use it more I may find week areas, but I haven't yet.

Just checked the 85L isn't listed for sale on onecall.com. I've seen it there before for around $2198. Must of pulled it until they can fix the price.

Yes, they pulled it. It was $1198, and some people are saying theirs has been shipped. Don't know for sure what happened there. I couldn't have afforded it anyway. Soon, but not then.

I'm grabbing the 1.8, I think. Monday.

Are you nuts? In a word - yes. It is by far one of my best lenses, L or no L. Fast focusing, great bokeh, it's the best deal out there. A million more times reliable the the 50 f1.4. I couldn't recommend it more.

Hi,

I'm a long time lurker and is also thinking of getting the 85 1.8. After four years of using my kit lens, I'm finally getting a new lens. I am wondering if there is a huge difference between the 1.2 and 1.8? I mean besides the price, one is 1.2 and the other is 1.8, one is an L and the other small little things. Is there a big enough difference between the two to justify the cost?

I am not one to purchase something cheaper now so I could pick up a better one later. I perfer to buy something that I know I will have a use for a long time. It might hurt the bank now but in the long run it will be cheaper for me. But the only way I will get the 1.2 is if there is a huge difference between the two. So should I get the 1.8 now or wait and get the 1.2 later?

Thanks,
E

There are differences. The 1.2 is more of a specialty lens. The 1.8 is one of the most versatile primes out there. It has one of the fastest focusing lens. It works great for sports and doubles as a great lens for portraits too.
It's built well, has ring USM motor. Really no reason why anyone shouldn't have this lens(aside from money factor).

Ronnie I don't care what you buy but I do think it's absurd that you believe a lens that many photographers use to feed their kids wouldn't be good enough for you.
