I had a grip on my XT. Shooting portrait wasn’t a problem, but shooting landscape was. I still had to deal with the skinny crammed handle.

All Canon platforms are great platforms to learn on and the differences between them inspire nothing but religious wars about camera size, better feel and such. Unless there is a some specific feature that you need go for cost. The body is much less important than the glass you slap on, and what really counts is if it can take the pictures you want. Go to the image sharing forums and just try to guess which camera a specific pic was taken. I think you’ll see that it isn’t the camera, but the one behind responsible. I have seem many a stunning photo taken with the DRebel and a stinker taken with a 5D. I’ll leave the 1D guys out because we all know that those cameras take award winning photos themselves as long as the photographer can point it kind of in the right direction.:) :) :) <- smiley... flames not necessary... :)

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

What's important to remember when Canon released the 10D it was a show stopper at the time, they threw all their technology in to it at the time as they were trying to break the consumer DSLR market at the time. I am sure it could have been a lost leader if it had not sold so well.

I started with an XT, then bought another as a backup. Send the original XT back to Canon for a refund. Purchased a 30D in the meantime. Sold the second (backup) XT and bout a 10D. Didn't mind the XTs when I had them, but AF was always bad on the one I returned, hence the return.

Both the 30D and the 10D are nice to have. 30D is faster than the 10D and better at higher ISO, but I've been using the 10D more lately. It's great at ISO400 and below, and usable above that. Startup & review times are slow but not intolerable unless you're constantly on-off with your camera and chimp a lot. Having the camera set to auto-review and hold lets you check your histogram faster - almost instantly after a shot - if you also set Review: On (Info). Leaving the switch on but letting it sleep speeds up the readiness so it's not so bad (or just turn off the auto-off completely). It works fine with all "made for digital" lenses except those from Canon themselves (EF-S specifically). AF is a little slower on the 10D than the 30D but it's not wretched, and IMO it seems more accurate since it's not trying to nail it real fast. Could be just my own perceptions though. 6MP vs 8 isn't a major deal. 8MP might let you squeeze out a poster that you couldn't otherwise get with 6MP, but if you're printing a lot of posters you really ought to be looking at medium format systems.

Just my 2 cents worth.

The 10d makes a nice backup to the 30d.:)

My first camera was a 300D. Loved it. I hacked to give me (almost) 10D functionality. There's something about those 6MP on a 1.6x crop body... the colours were beautiful, amazing quality from that little rebel. The 10D is an awesome camera, don't hesitate to buy it! use the money you'd save to get some quality glass!

I have had my 10D for along time and still love it I upgraded this week to 30D because of the shots on my 10D.I think that it is more than capable, and will last you a long time.

It's taken me over 3 and a half years and I've only now begun to come up against the limits of the 10D's performance, and that's only when shooting things like racing cars. For day to day stuff the camera still rocks, and I think I'll probably just keep shooting with it till it dies.

One point that no-body has mentioned so far is the grip, which from what I seen is far superior to the 20 or 30's version.

In my own opinion they aren't that much different.

I read all the responses so far. Quite honestly I see nothing wrong with any of Canon's cameras. They all take a photo. They all have Ap, Sp, P and M modes. The other differences are really quite inconsequential. Work within the limitations of your gear - all gear has limitations. Great photos come from understanding those limitations and working within them.

Good plan!

The 10D is a wonderful camera and will make a good backup when you upgrade. Grab yourself a nifty fifty (Canon 50mm f/1.8 ) to put your 10D and you will have yourself an excellent tool to learn on.

Better yet, something that autofocuses well. ;)

I'm glad there are other 10d user's out there who agree with me, I'm not the kind of persone who "must have" the latest as it will take better pictures, the picture is in the mind you make it first the camera captures it, no amount of money will make up for bad technique
