We bought our daughter a Kodak 6490 with docking station and printer. She loves it and handles it well, even though she is only 42.

A 40D, a 30D, some nice glass and a great Shooting Partner.

I'm really keen to get my older son a point and shoot - he's only 2.5 but he loves chimping, and understands what is happening when taking photos with a p&s. I just want to find one made in nice sturdy plastic, but there don't seem to be any companies that make "My first digital camera" which is a real shame.

BTW, I think jabtas idea of giving the camera to your child and not forcing them to use it or anything like that is a great idea. I'm rather young myself, but I found photography on my own, not because somebody told me to go take great photos or something.

Well, for someone who's rather young, you've got a great kit, so you've got the kit, and the enthusiasm, so you should go far :).

Time will tell. I lack a lot in the artistic side of my brain.

Hehe, people are creative in different ways - I completely lack any design ability whatsoever, but express my creativity in portraiture - everyone's different, and I think there's a photographer in everyone, you just need to find the style of photography that suits you.

There was a similar thread here recently that included a link to a Fisher-Price camera for kids. Low res - but high durability, apparently. Might want to do a search for that and see.

apparently the fisher price "my first camera" is very durable. looks way too bulky though imo.

I plan on giving my old a10 to my son when he can operate and understand cameras (he's 14 months). you could probably find one of those for cheap. I've dropped mine numerous times and haven't had any issue with it in 6 years.
