I've had my Slingshot 200 carry-on weighed the last 4 QANTAS flights in a row I've taken.

Every time I had to put a lens in my GF's hand bag at the check-in desk, and then put it back in my bag once I left the desk.

I've never been weighed at the gate, only at the check-in desk.

I was initially going to recommend the 24-105 (ultimate lens on the 5D), but if you are taking the 17-40 then go for the 70-200.
The 30mm difference won't be too much of an issue, as you can cover that distance by walking or just skip the shot if the composition is wrong.

The last time I was back home in Sydney (in Feb) I had use of a 70-200 f/2.8 IS and a Tamron 28-300, and I can assure you I was very relieved to have them with me for Taronga Zoo!

If you like wildlife (or perhaps surfing) you'll be kicking yourself if you don't have a longer lens - but depends on what you are interested in and what you're prepared to carry :)

Had a surfing lesson at Manly last time I was there a couple of years ago.. You don't need much reach on a lens to capture me.

Perhaps the 70-200 & a tele convertor instead of the 50 is the way to go as there is a rebate on convertors.

Can you use both the 1.4 or 2X's with AF on the 5D.

SQ has instructed security to generally weigh any carry on that looks like its over weight. when you check in and get your ticket, just tell them that your carry on items are camera equipment and computer equipment. they'll give you a priority tag with a stamp and a signature which will let you carry on your equipment. i have to do this every time i fly them now (which is quite often).

As far as I can tell I'm just limited to 7kgs with singapore Air, I'll have to check the weights of the items.. Thanks for that.

I wasn't very clear in my original post it was either the 50 or 24-105 :o

they never checked the luggage unless you bring very big bag of backpackers, usually i brought my bag with full of equipments and 15'' laptop and never had any problems before

I reckon a 50 1.8 would be a good idea. Weighs almost nothing for carry on , but cheap and small enough to just leave in your main luggage anyway.
Do you own the 70-200 F4 or intending to purchase? I'll throw a 200 2.8 into your scenario. More compact than a 70-200 F4. Add a 1.4 TC and you'll have 280 F4 and have some decent reach.
A non Canon 1.4TC is fairly cheap , so it could go in with your main luggage as well. Easy to pack small things well enough to survive the baggage throwers.

I intend to purchase. As much as the 200 2.8 looks a nice lens (wish I could afford the 24-105 and the 200 as well) it'll limit my scope a bit when travelling as there'd be nothing from 50 up to 200mm.

Keep in mind that if you fly Qantas or Air New Zealand, since March they have very strict guidelines about weight of carryons being under 7.5 kg (check web site...might be actually 7 kg) and this is especially strict on domestic flights (within country). So bring FEW lenses, unless you trust them to checked baggage (not!)

Hi, i just back from a from QLD. on the flight up [Qantas] has a 7kg limit, but nobody but me seemed to observe it. 2 people carried on 3 very heavy back packs, staff seem to just ignore it.

on the flight back [Virgin Blue] was just as bad for excess luggage.

To OP, depending on what you shoot. there are time i wanted something longer that the 70-200, but you work around your equipment limitations.

Hope you have a great time in OZ.

Harry
