Thoughts on 70-200 f/4 for people/portraits?

I think it just may not be the best tool for portraits in general terms. Of course you can get excellent results with this lens, like with any other lens, but a fast prime like the 50 f1.4, 85 f1.8 or 135L will offer you more possibilities, particularly better DOF control, etc.

Optically this is a great portrait lens. The problem is, even at 70mm, I find I have to stand about 3 metres back, more for more than one person.

Have you had enough time to thoroughly compare the IS and non-IS versions? Have you found that your handheld shots are sharper with the IS version?

Harrydog -- i am still testing. when i was at the zoo i shot at iso 100 and 200 mostly and i had a higher rate of keepers than i normally get with the non-IS and with the non-IS i would have been @ iso400.
