I haven't had too many photo ops lately, so I decided to try and create some on my own. :D I've been wanting to shoot a lot of color lately and decided to try some ideas using M&M candies.

The first few shots I tried was simple, varying DOF shots with many M&Ms spread across a white cloth on the dinner table. Turned out OK but boring.... then for the last few shots though I had my 6 year old son stand at the end of the table and strike a pose or two for me.

There's something about the setting/surroundings that I don't like about the shot, but I thought it was cute enough that I would go ahead and share. CC welcomed as always.

That is a great expression!

I think I know what you don't like: the chair rail is too symetrical to the table top. It immediately caught my eye.

Thanks Stavhp!

Thanks Misskitty, I believe you are right. If the chair rail weren't in the photo at all, I believe it would definitely help the image.

I like this idea also, but I would either make sure the chair rail is perfectly parallel to the table top, or eliminate it altogether. If you had a different angle you could eliminate the dark shadow under the chair rail as this caught my eye immediately (after the color of the m&m's). I think it is because of all the color that the dark shadow of the chair rail stands out.

I really like the choice of depth of field. The colors fade in as you are drawn to your son in the pic. Good job!

As the mother of 7 and 5 year old sons, I am surprised that you didn't have to lock yourself in a room to do this shoot! :D

I love the shot - your son is perfect in it. He's adoreable and his expresion and pose are perfect. I think the situational distraction for me is that with the wallpaper and chair rail the setting is very "familiar", but seeing that many M&M's at once is not. KWIM?

and Agger - I think M&M's are better than Smarties. ;)

Thanks for the excellent feedback all!

Athena, funny you mention that! My boys are 8 and 6, and were EXTREMELY intrigued while I was setting this up. I had to run them out of the kitchen a few times before I finally started shooting.

Misskitty, I have a TON of M&Ms and would be happy to send some your way. I used just under 4 lbs of M&Ms to create the shot. They're all in a gallon sized ziplock back now, just calling to my sons!

Oh, and I like M&Ms better than smarties also! :D

Thanks again for the kind words

I really like it too. If I was knowledgeable enough I'd have a go at cloning out the chair rail since you have image editing turn on.

Thanks!

I considered removing the chair rail in PS, but haven't taken up the task yet. Since the paint below the chair rail shows, you would have to clone that out as well. The paint job above the chair rail is a faux finish, so it might be challenging to clone it without making the edit visible. (well, it would be probably be tough for me. :p )

Hope everyone has a nice weekend.
