chuck,
i swim out into the lineup. usually its not that big of a deal except when theres a ton of drift and i have a heck of a time trying to stay in the right position.

ive been shooting since the beginning with a rebel xt, ive captured some solid water photographs. its not about the type of camera or frames per second..sure they help out when your out there, but being in the right spot for the wave/rider is very important...

Thats one of the coolest shots I've seen. Never from that perspective. Very interesting.

ec, i hear you on that current issue. one of my favorite spots to shoot is imperial beach, and when it's on, the current is brutal. it's a constant swim to stay in one spot, and than when you stop swimming to shoot someone you're 20 yards up the beach. were you stationary with this shot, or were you body surfing the wave when you took this? also, have you used your flash with your water setup? i have a flash housing coming and have never fired a flash. should be quite a learning curve.
thanks,
chuck

nice shot

taking good surfing pics, i would assume, just requires a decent working knowledge of surfing itself. once you know how a wave will break, where the takeoff spot is, where its gonna stand up or hollow or mush out then you can position yourself to be in the best spot to get a good shot. i cant wait to start shooting some surfing but i gotta get a camera first!

Chuck,
Imperial Beach is sick when it's firing! I've seen good stuff from that place. I'm never really stationary in the water. Where I live doesn't usually get heaving shorebreak which I prefer. I'm usually in front of the wave and anticipate when it's going to barrel over. Then I just "swoop" into the wave and take the shot....doesn't sound too hard right?

Also, I haven't had the oppertunity to put my flash into a housing yet. It will only cost me $200, but I'm trying to save some money so I can travel. The 580ex flash is the flash you want to put into a housing because it's a powerhouse. But, I'm having trouble understanding the flash to begin with. It'll be a little while before I get a housing setup for my flash. A flash housing can only be used in the early morning or the evening hours.

A fixed prime zoom lens is next on the list....the 300 f/4 or 2.8 maybe? :)

Anyways, here's another shot that I took this particular evening...
