Ok i need to start by saying that i am a PSCS2 newb. I usually shoot large jpg, and do a few basic tweaks to get the most from my crappy shots.

That being said, i want to learn to do the conversions and stuff so i took a few test shots, and wanted to bumble around and learn a bit.

I cant even open them. I have a rebel XT, and it creates .CR2 files. i cant get them to open in bridge, CS2 or anything. It says it cannot be opened because i have the incorrect file type.

can anyone help with basics, i have read alot of stickies, and none of them address this (the very first) step and the adobe help doesnt gimme the solution.

Oh BTW, i DL irfanview, and i can preview them in the pane, but i cant get them to open to full size.

All the help is much appreciated

sounds like you need to download the newest version ov Adobe Camera Raw from adobe. Its a free update that you can search for on their site. Just place it in the correct folder and you're good to go.

I'll also try and sell you on trying the Adobe Lightroom program if you are just getting into RAW. Its a free beta for now and imo, much more user friendly and way more powerful that the RAW converter in PSCS2

I would agree with Corey on this one. You just need the most recent version of ACR.

Here is the link (external link) for the camera raw program from Adobe. There is also a link on this same page that will take you to Lightroom.

If you want to understand more about RAW there is another link here that gives you a pdf that is titled "Understanding Digital RAW Capture". Somewhat technical in nature but a good read nonetheless.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

any raw converter is better than large JPG.

I was the worlds largest advocate of taking jpg's and just getting the exposure right in camera, but the raw gives you so much control, i am converted... no pun intended.

hello,

I had a problem with some raw files i have not had before. The pics are fine on the camera, and they download from the camera to the computer okay, so far as i can work out. The problem is when i open a program to view the raw files. I have used canon digital professional, this has always worked fine, adobe photoshop and every other program i can think of . The trouble is i cant see the pictures. Just a blank frame to show where the picture should be. The sizes of the files seems correct, at about 8.0megabites each. The jpegs downloaded from the same camera from the same shoot fine. Anyone had this problem before. As usual the best pics were done in raw so it would be greta to recover them. thanks.
