Sigma and Tamron, any good?

Are Sigma and Tamron lenses any good? I mean, are there Sigma and Tamron lenses that produce an IQ like L lenses. Canon lenses are so expensive (even the mediocre ones) and I know there are a few commonly bought Tamron and Sigmas, so I suspect that their quality can be quite good on the higher end, but how does it compare with L type of lenses.

There's nothing in the world as good as the Sigma 120-300 f/2.8 in that focal range. Best 120-300 zoom that exists. It's pretty amazing with a 1.4x as well. :)

Among the best ones I've seen:

Sigma EX 24-70; 10-20; 17-80; 70-200
Tamron: 28-70

Have a look on fredmiranda.com for feedback.

Two lenses that I would say produce "L" quality images are the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 and the Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6

I was a hardcore 'canon only' believer.. then, I broke down.. bought the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 and I got to tell ya.. between my L and the Tammy it is a pretty close call as to which I like better... (the L wins... but not by a whole lot).. I do think there are good and bad third party glass but when you find a gem it's kind of like finding that bag at Macy's for forty percent off.. it just feels really, really good...

There's a lot of 3rd party lenses that interest me because of their great IQ and low price, but man, I just can't stand the build quality. Nothing beats the L build. I don't even like my 50 f/1.4.

So if I buy a 30D and a Tamron SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD Asp (IF), that would make for a killer portrait couple, right? :D

And now to further complicate the question, Tamron SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD Asp (IF) or Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG? ;)

Can I espect them to work with future camera just like if it was a Canon lens, or are there going to be troubles? I know that my two old Sigmas are unlikely to work with digital, for example, while they work just fine with my Elan 7ne.

Thanks.

as long as it's an EF mount you won't have a problem.. ofcourse they have to be made for Canon...

Well, someone at the factory was on a controlled substance if they made an EF mount lens for bodies other than Canon.

As far as Sigma, Tamron, et al being any good...that's to be determined on a lens by lens basis. Just like Canon Ls and non-Ls.

Just like any manufacturer (including Canon) there are good and bad.

I'm very happy with my Sigma 17-70mm but probably too slow for what you want.

? Sigma EX lenses are built like bricks. I'm pretty sure I could beat someone to death with my Bigma and still have a functional lens afterwards.
