Hi All,

I recently upgraded from a 10D to a new 30D. I have installed all the software, but the camera isn't always recognized by my computer. I have to unplug the cable or swtich the camera on and aff several times before the 30D is recognized. I never had this problem with the 10D.

I have tried reinstalling the software, but have had no luck. Has anyone else had this problem and how was it resolved?

Yes, I could use a card reader, but it's one more thing to carry about.

Thanks!
~Dom

my suggestion would be to get a card reader, its really not that much to carry with you. I picked up one at my local electronics store for 6 dollars after rebates. what kind of computer are you using, maybe that will help people diagnose your problem even better. hope that helps.

Try uninstalling the software, and doing a reinstall. But before you reinstall, shut the computer down for a few seconds, restart and then reinstall the software.

I installed the software. It works. I never use it because I find my card reader more convenient.

Now that I know the software works I will never bother installing it again when I get another computer or camera.

I'm using XP. I have tried uninstalling the USB ports, restarting the computer, and then reinstalling the ports again. I haven't had any problems since then. I am crossing my fingers!

I will get a CF adapter, just in case!

Thanks,
~Dom

Hi All,

The USB strategy didn't work, nor did multiple attempts to uninstall the Canon software. It seems that even if you use the Windows Add/Remove utility, some remnants of the original Canon installations remain.

Here is a solution which ended up working for me. Feel free to try this, but at your own risk! Making uninformed changes to the registry and windows folder is dangerous!

1. Uninstall all Canon programs

2. Using Notepad, inspect all oemxx.inf files for any references to Canon cameras. I then delete theoemXX.inf file corresponding oemXX.pnf file. These files are found in c:\windows\inf

3. Run Windows registry (regedit.exe) and delete a folder named "Canon" which has subfolders with the names of Canon software. (Mine was located at: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon )

4. Deleted any files/folders related Canon cameras in c:\windows\twain_32 (I wanted a USB transfer, not Twain.)

5. Restart the computer

6. Reinstall the Canon Software

7. Restart the computer

8. Connect the 30D

Since using the above strategy, I have been having no trouble whatsoever!

Alot of work when a $6 CF Reader will do a better job. Te only time I need to connect the camera to the PC was to input user name and to toy w/ the remote teather s/w.

Yes, you may be right about using the card reader, but I wanted to have the option of using the bundled software as needed.

The strategy I used could also be effective in deleting other software which is being bothersome. Besides learning more about how my computer and camera work, I also found the challenge of getting the camera/computer/software combination to work properly fun!

Dom:

Interesting. The registry isn't all that scary once you've been into it.

I've been using the USB connection with my 30D from the get-go with no problems. I don't use the CF card reader because that entails opening the door, taking the card out, closing the door to make sure it doesn't get damaged (one initial complaint was the flimsiness of the door), then reversing the procedure.

There is also the possibility of damaging the connector pins on the camera. I've read threads talking about this.

The USB connection seems more durable to me, and I find that plugging the USB cable into the camera is easier than taking the CF card out and putting it back in.

I use the USB method directly from the camera. I always get the message "Camera Not Recognised" Then a blue light appears on the back of the camera (400D) which I press and watch the files quickly download.
Does it matter that the camera model is not recognised?

In my case the blue light only came on when the my 30D was recognised by the computer. Everything is working well now since I played about with the registry and inf files.

Hi,

I had the same problem and have concluded that the problem is "memory leak" on the PC. I am one of those folks who never turns off the PC. I have noticed that PSCS causes an issue sometimes when I leave it online for several days and then close it. I am convinced that it is a memory problem and the program leaves "holes" in the memory when it closes down.

My solution is to reboot the PC once a week or after a long PSCS session. This works great and my 30D has synced flawlessly since I started doing this.

BTW, I have a Dell PC 3 Gig of RAM and I use Windows XP Professional.

I had a card reader from the get-go but it's funny how we all have our preferences and peeves. I would much rather open the compartment for the CF card, which feels secure and snaps tightly into place than to open and close the rubber port caps, which I find to be flimsy and don't always clip back in and lay flush. I had the same opinion with my A620. The rubber port door is not the best idea as far as I'm concerned but I do understand the purpose of the design.
