The 50 1.4 if a super lens as the review above reports. The important point is that it will give you better colours!!!
All the other minor advantages add up to a lens youwill always be happy to use.
Avoid 'other' manufacturers lenses like the plague - NONE of them have the ultrasonic motor and they are all just 'me too' products produced in inferior factories.
Retailers stock them for two reasons - and they are both BAD!
1. The distributors buy big ads in the photo mags thereby creating 'interest'
2. Much larger profit margins than OE lenses..
Good luck in your search and be sure to let us know what you eventually decide on...
Cheers

Peter . . . . You don't stop playing because you grow old - you grow old because you stop playing!
Canon 20D ----- EF 17-40L -- EF 70-200L -- EF-S 10-22 -- EF 50 1.4 + several lesser pieces of glass plus two eyes.
Canon 420 Speedlight, Benbo tripod, Photoshop and a little talent!

That's a bit harsh! Sounds like you've been burned a few times.

I agree in part... a lot of the 3rd party lenses are rubbish, but there are some exceptionally good ones too. One thing to note though is that service & support from those companies may or may not be present in your area. I've heard Sigma's support in Australia is terrible. I'm sure it's much better in the States.

You will find many excellent values in Tamron, Tokina and Sigma lens families. The Tamron 28-75 is almost universally considered to offer not just acceptable, but superior image quality. Tokina lenses are consistently described as "built like a tank", and Sigma EX lenses use Sigma's equivalent of USM, called HSM, and are fast and accurate in the focusing department.

While, as with any significant purchase, the buyer must do proper investigation of the available products versus her needs and budget, you will do yourself a grave disservice if you ignore 3rd party lenses out of hand.
