Can someone set me straight. What do I get if I match this lens with my Rebel XT body? Will the view actually be 17mm - 85mm or will it be 28 - 135mm?
This 1.6 crop factor has me confused.

NOTE: I bought the body only and have been using a Sigma 24-70 and it is definetely not actually 24mm wide...35mm maybe.

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks
Mike

Multiplying by 1.6 still applies. So the 17-85 is a 27-136 in 35mm terms.

with the rebel or any 1.6 crop factor body, just multiply the lens range by 1.6.

so the 17-85 is ~ 27.2mm - 136mm on your xt.

focal length is focal length...it is not multiplied. However, the FOV for a different format sizes will vary. To state this in correct context, a 17mm lens mounted on a Rebel XT results in a FOV (amount of area of subject scene) which is captured on the sensor that is like using a 27mm lens on a 35mm SLR (or 27mm lens on FF dSLR like the 5D).

Focal length does not change when you put the lens on a different camera. A 17-85 lens will always be a 17-85 lens.

What does change is how much of the image circle different cameras use. Full frame cameras use a bigger portion of the image circle so they need a longer lens to give the same image that you get on your XT. The 1.6 factor is what you multiply lens length on your XT by to determine what lens you would need to take the same picture with a 5D. As a result a 28-135 lens on a 5D will give almost exactly the same pictures you can get with a 17-85 on your XT.
