The trick to this problem is; have more than one memory card. Put a new in the camera when you remove the card to put in the reader, and once you've copied the file to the computer, you put it back in the camera bag. And if you end up with no cards in the camera, you have forgotten to remove the card from the reader and it cant' hold both. :D

I first found out that the Canon takes pics without the card the hard way. It was the second or third day I had the camera. We went out to a local preserve and I happily snapped away never really paying much attention to the back screen or I would have seen the giant letters printed across every pic saying "HEY IDIOT, YA GOT NO CARD". After a great day, I went to plug in the card into the reader and noticed that it was already in the computer. Well, I didn't remember plugging it in but obviously I must have because there it was. But when I reviewed the pics, I was flabbergasted that NONE of the pics I took were there. Later while perusing the manual did I finally discover that the Canon has a feature to allow you to take a pic without a card. I now disable that fine feature just so I don't look like an idiot taking pictures no one will ever see. Oh, and before I leave the house I check both battery, card, and I snap a junk pick just to make sure all is well.

First of all, did anyone ask for some of those great pics you took that day??

"Oh, uh..... my computer crashed, and i lost them all"

Well, at least you got some good practice in!! Before leaving my house i follow your EXACT same procedure and make sure all is good.

Battery / is it charged?

I've posted this before. My camera bags are under my laptop desk. When I take the CF card out, I don't engage the clasp on the camera bag. This has worked for many-many A Ha moments. I don't leave the house without checking that the bag is closed. If it is not, I know I left the card in the computer. Also, I bought extra CF cards in a case that I hunt for before leaving the house. If it is not already in my case, I will look for it and it will be on my computer desk. I don't walk around with it. I even have a way I put the cards in my case that tell me if I downloaded the pictures onto my computer or not. If I haven't, I will see they are upside down and backwards in the case. This way I avoid deleting before downloading. I hope I helped.

I am constantly leaving a CF card in the reader. I have five 4 GB cards and keep them in a Gepe box. Always in the backpack. Thus even though there is usually one in the CF reader, I still have 4 more with me.

I think the Extreme III because of the weather protection, but I was offered a good deal on a couple 133X lexars so I might just buy them.

Extra cards. I learned last year at Christmas. Went to my mom's house with my kids to visit with Santa. Found I had no card in my camera, and no spare in the bag. Went to my brother to borrow his camera, only to find his batteries were dead and he didn't have a CF card. We ended up with my mom's little P&S.

I started packing an extra memory card the next day. He started packing an extra battery. At least we learned. I still forget my card in the card reader from time to time, but I always have at least one backup in the bag.

Get a 1D2N. Dual card slots. If you take one out, there's always the other one. Only take the second one out when you've put the first one back in.

OK, it's an expensive fix !!!

I have notes in the camera bag to check everything before heading out plus all my spare CF cards are in the bag.

I'm good at remembering to put the card back into the camera, it's the damn batteries I keep forgetting!!!

Apart from that I always keep CF cards in my camera bag so I usually have something to spare.

I sew a 2GB CF Card in the pocket of every pair of pants I own. They are my emergency backup cards for when I leave mine in the card reader in my computer.

Man, sewing is the key part I guess, if I left one in there it'de be killed in the wash.
