A while back, I posted a thread about my new EFS 17-55 f/2.8 that was quickly accumulating internal dust. Within a few days of normal use I could count about 20 specks of dust internally. Every session using it, more dust seemed to get sucked inside. I ended up returning it to BH Photo for another. I have used the second lens for several weeks now and there is absolutely zero dust internally. The first lens, I never used a UV filter, the second one, I immediately put on a B+W MRC UV after taking the lens out of the box. Is it possible that the lens could suck in the dust somewhere around the front element and the UV filter is preventing the dust problem? I've noted that some users of this lens seem to have the dust problem and others don't. I would be curious if there is a correlation between lack of the dust problem and UV filter use.

I've used Hoya Super HMC UV filter as soon as the lens arrived for a couple months now and no dust so far...I wonder if that's the trick for preventing dust...

I'd be more inclined to believe the dust entering via the zooming of the lens barrel.

Ditto. And mine is sharp sharp sharp! I keep it in a backpack, and if I don't use one of the lenses in the pack for say a week, there's usually 8+ specs of dust on the front of the various lenses.

Did I say that right? Basically dust free on my 17-55 ;)

moew!!!!!

No dust yet. Not sure if it would be zoom barrel or front element. I did put a Hoya HMC as soon as I got though.

Do the lenses that are collecting dust have a lower serial number? Has anyone looked into whether only earlier lenses have the dust issue?

Hypothesis...those with dust did not properly christen the lens by taking the photo of a duck.

Evidence to the contrary to be volunteered?...

My replacement lens is a low serial number at 171... and is absolutely dust free. Dramatically different from my dust-sucking first lens which was also in the 171... range. Only difference is the UV filter on this one which prompted me to start this thread.

So yeah, is there anyone out there who had a filter on their 17-55 from day one and has an internal dust problem?
