Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8

Anyone have any comments on these...

I am debating between the Canon 70-200 2.8 and the Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8, I dont really need the extra reach, of course soon as I say that I will, but can I get opinions and comments on the Sigma please.

Um get the Canon! If you can afford the Canon 70-200 f2.8 (non IS I assume) get it. The f2.8 Canon is absolutely amazing and will blow away the 50-150 lens all the way. Don't waste your money on Sigma if you can help it.

Sigma do make some good and great lenses but the 50-150 doesn't seem to be one from the reviews I have read so far.

if you want a sigma get the 70-200 2.8
that 50-150 is just an odd range.

This lens sounds like it would be a good companion for the 17-55 f/2.8 IS EF-S, but I wouldn't trade my Canon 70-200 f/2.8 for it.

For my kit, I am waiting to see if Canon comes up with something similar with IS, hopefully a 50-200 f/2.8 IS EF-S. I would prefer that to the Sigma, and if it gets good enough ratings I would consider using it instead of the 70-200.

There was one recent post where the guy cleaned the body and viola, it was focusing PERFECTLY! 50-150 looked VERY sharp from the pics he posted!

If i didn't already have my long named 70-200mm sigma (which is phenominal), I would have seriously considered this internal focusing lens!

It's a great lens ! I'm glad I bought it. Love the sharpness, speed ,size ,weight, focal length. Hand holds easy, doesn't really need IS.
Takes a 1.4 converter great. But if I need the extra reach , I just put on the sigma EX100-300mm.

Really the focal lenght is great for what I needed. Tried a friend's 70-200f/4. The wide end was to much for me. And I think the Sigma was sharper.

See if you can try one before you buy one.

I have to have a larger aperture for indoor shooting so....

Should be here thursday along with my 20D

I disagree - on a crop camera it's essentially the same as a 70-200 on a full frame, so unless everyone with a 5D/1DS etc. is nuts to have this lens....

The lens appeals to me a lot, but waiting for more certainty re quality control/focus issues.

definitly of the two lenses, unless weight is a big deal to you the canon 70-200 2.8 will be a much better lens.

Have you tried the Sigma?

I'd agree with what you said, but only because of the focussing issues. If I can get a Sigma that focusses OK, that's as good for image quality as the 2 copies I tried, it will have the Canon beaten on everything except (slightly) focus speed. I've tried/owned both the Canon 70-200 f/2.8 and the old 80-200 f/2.8, and both were pretty much the same as my 70-200 f/4 from f/4 upwards (and clearly softer at f/2.8 ). I don't have the those f/2.8s any more but the Sigma was a little better than the 70-200/4 at f/4 and only slightly poorer at f/2.8.

If only I can get one that focusses well...
